| 91 Slop began in the Fall of 1998. The show was hosted by Matt Rowland and Eric Vaget, and it showcased funk, soul jazz, and other flavor. The hosts graduated from Vanderbilt in the Spring of 1999, and the show went on hiatus the following summer. In the Fall of 1999, Matt returned to Nashville, reviving 91 Slop with Nate, former DJ of "File Under Hep." Nate's old show focused primarily on ska and reggae, but was beginning to get into dub and some Jamaican funk. Thus, the new incarnation of 91 Slop featured more of this type of music, plus Matt's choices in psychedelic rock, and the classic funk, soul, and jazz featured since the show's inception. Matt moved out of Nashville later that Fall, leaving Nate at the controls. Slop was a solo mission until August 2001, when Eric (aka E-Watts) joined the crew. E-Watts co-hosted for over a year before having to give up the show due to a changing work schedule. Currently, Nate is again the sole (soul) host of the show. E-Watts still drops in on the occasional Friday night off, and this usually results in a rare revival of 91 Flavas (his award-winning late 90s hip hop show) in the Slop timespot. Currently, the show airs on Friday evenings from 6 to 8 (Central Time). Funk and soul are still staples in the Slop lineup, but the show also features samplings of psych rock, electric blues, soul jazz, fusion, avant garde proto-funk, African sounds, Jamaican styles, weird soundtrack themes, etc. |
