Synopsis
Dylan is a play written by Sidney Michaels based upon the life of the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. The play chronicles Dylan's tour of America leading ultimately to his death at a young age. An exciting episodic play, this piece illuminates the personal visions and tragedies of this great poet and his wife Caitlin Thomas, former Irish dancer, who simply loved Dylan beyond compare despite his alcoholism, numerous affairs and a very volatile and violent relationship. If you enjoy the poems of Dylan Thomas, you will love this biographical play.

Notes
from the Director
by David Golden
Dylan Thomas, one of the contemporary world's great poets, led a raucous, debauched, drunken life setting out to accomplish his childhood goal of being the world's drunkest man. This play is a reasonably accurate biographical account of Dylan's two trips to the United States. Based on Dylan Thomas in America by John Malcom Brinnin and Leftover Life to Kill by Thomas' widow, Caitlin, both characters in the play, the play is staged in multiple locations forcing the use of a unit set. Filled with joie de vivre, Dylan led a rich an textured life until his death at the age of 39.

Dramaturgical Notes

I hold a beast, an angel, and a madman in me, and my enquiry is as to their working, and my problem is their subjugation and victory, down throw and upheaval, and my effort is their self-expression.
--Dylan Marlais Thomas

At the invitation and under the guidance of American poet John Malcolm Brinnin, Dylan Thomas made four lecture tours across the United States, during which he seduced the America public with his charismatic personality. These tours ensured his international reputation as a poet, but did not satisfy Dylan's needs, either emotionally or financially. It was on the last of these tours that Dylan succumbed to an alcohol-related illness.

Although Dylan refers to writing poetry as a "magical accident," he spent years agonizing over his work, carefully choosing each word and faithfully recopying each version of his pieces. In addition to poetry, he also wrote several books of short stories, radio plays, and a full-length play for voice, Under Milkwood. His work is full of strong imagery, flowing language and addresses timeless issues of the human experience: love, nature, death, and faith. Today, Dylan is remembered as one of the greatest lyric poets of all time.
