Summary: Blain warns Sebastian about Annette, but he might be too late as Annette plans to get rid of Kathryn for good.

Chapter 18: The Real Annette

"Ring...Ring...Ring"

Sebastian could faintly make out the sound of the ringing telephone. He had fallen asleep shortly after Annette had left dreaming of what he was going to say to Kathryn. That was if she ever spoke to him again.

He really didn't want to answer the phone, but it kept on ringing so finally he somehow managed to get up. His head was aching from all the alcohol he had consumed and he could barely concentrate on walking. "I have to stop drinking" he groaned as he reached for the phone and picked up the receiver. "What?"

"Tell me does anyone answer with hello anymore?"

"Blain? What do you want?"

There was a sigh of exasperation on the other end "nice to here from you too Valmont. I take it you haven't talked to Kathryn."

At the mention of her name Sebastian grabbed his head in pain. "No, not since she walked out on me. You were right, my brilliant plan blew up in my face. Kathryn hates me."

"She doesn't hate you. She's incredible pissed off, but she'll probably get over it eventually."

"You talked to her? What did she say?"

"Well she basically yelled at me for not filling her in on your little plot and there was a mention of wanting to kill you. However that's not why I'm calling. It's about Annette."

"What about her?"

"Well how do I out this? The girl isn't playing with a full deck."

Sebastian sat down on the couch and lit up a cigarette "I don't follow. You don't even know Annette."

"No but I know plenty about her. You wanted to know the reason she left town, well she tried to kill herself. Apparently she went over the deep end after you dumped her. The headmaster then had her shipped back to a hospital in Kansas where she's been getting treated. Supposedly she's all recovered that's why she's back, but Kathryn thinks-"

"Kathryn" said Sebastian shaking his head in disbelief "did she put you up to this? Is this her idea of revenge, you two trying to convince me that Anent is what, unstable?"

"Sebastian, it's the truth. I'm the one who told Kathryn. I'm calling to warn you. I think she's obsessed with you."

"Blain if what you say is true about her tying to kill herself, what makes you think she is obsessed with me?"

"She threatened Kathryn before she left. She told her to stay away from you, supposedly she knows all about the two of you."

Sebastian began to recall earlier that night. His memory was a little foggy, but he remembered Annette telling him that she loved him.
Right after I told her I loved Kathryn. He recalled Annette telling him Kathryn wasn't good enough for him. She had been acting out of character and she was wearing Kathryn's nightgown. If he hadn't been so out of it he would of noticed right away. There was something else though, what had she said? She left, he remember that she was going back into the city. I'll take care of Kathryn once and for all. That was it.

"Hello Sebastian, are you there?"

He had forgotten Blain on the other end "yeah I'm here. Look do you think Annette is dangerous?"

"I don't know, why? Where is she now?"

"I think she was heading back to the city. I think she said something about talking to Kathryn."

"You think?"

"I was a little out of it, ok. God, you don't think she would hurt her do you?"

"Well she seems unstable..."

"Right, look Blain do me a favor and call Kathryn. I'm going home, and so help me if Annette does anything to her.."

"Kathryn can take care of herself."

"Let's hope so" he said as he hung up the phone.

* * * * * *

Sometime later Kathryn began to awake. Her head was throbbing and she could feel something pinching her wrists. She pulled at them but she couldn't move them. What the fuck? Her eyes adjusted to the light and she realized she was in her room. What happened?

"Well I see you finally decided to wake up"

Kathryn looked up to see Annette standing in front of her wearing a strange smile. She was also holding a gun. Kathryn immediately tried to get up but found she couldn't, her arms where tied behind the chair and her legs were bound. "Oh fuck" Kathryn groaned as fragments of memory began to return to her. I came home and decided to call Sebastian. Had to warn him about Annette in case she tried to hurt him. Apparently he wasn't the one she wanted to hurt.

"Surprised to see me? I wanted to finish the conversation we had before you left."

Kathryn once again tried to loosen the ropes that were tying her but it wasn't working. "You've got to be kidding me. Untie me now."

"Or what? In case you haven't noticed I'm the one with the gun."

Staring at the gun in front of her, Kathryn wondered where Annette had gotten it. "Yeah, I noticed that. What are you going to do Annette shoot me? That will send Sebastian running into your arms."

"Shut up! You are not the one in control here, I am! This is all your fault. Your the one who made him break up with me."

"News flash nut job, he never wanted you. The only reason he bothered with you was so he could have me. He was more then willing to dump you after he used you."

Annette's anger rose and she shook the gun in Kathryn's face "That's because you brainwashed him. We were in love and you were just jealous that he didn't want you. Well guess what I'm going to fix that."

As she watched Annette wave the gun around a twinge of panic came through Kathryn but she refused to be scared of Annette. "Look Annette I've know Sebastian a lot longer then you and I think I know him a little better then that. He didn't love you, you were just a bet. Now untie me!"

Annette laughed coldly "not going to happen."

Kathryn let out a groan of frustration "god, this is like some bad movie of the week. When I get out of here, and I will, your dead. I'll tell everyone what a complete psycho you are including your father. I have a feeling this time they won't let you out of the loony bin."

Annette's face fell "how do you know about that?"

Kathryn smiled triumphantly "I know all about you dear. I know how you tried to kill yourself after Sebastian dumped you, how your father shipped you off to some nut house in Kansas and told everyone it was because of stress and that you probably faked your recovery to get out so you could stalk Sebastian some more. Tell me Annette, does daddy know about your little obsession with my brother?"

"Shut up! You don't know anything. I love Sebastian, I just wanted to be with him and you turned him against me." Annette sat down in the chair across form Kathryn. All of a sudden this far away look came into her eyes as she spoke. "He told me he was in love with someone else, but I thought it was a lie. I called him that night over and over again but he wouldn't pick up, if he just picked up everything would of been fine."

Kathryn remembered back to the night that Sebastian broke up with Annette and something occurred to her. The phone rang, I told him to pick it up and he broke it. "I remember."

Annette turned to Kathryn as if suddenly realizing she was still in the room "remember what?"

"The phone ringing" Kathryn said matter a factly.

"You were with him?"

"Yes, as a matter of fact we were in this very room. The phone was ringing and you know what your precious Sebastian was busy doing? Fucking my brains out."

Annette's eyes narrowed "you're lying."

Kathryn smiled "no I'm not. We were fucking and then his cell phone rang. I told him to pick it up and he refused. Finally after I stopped riding him he picked it up and threw it against the wall." Kathryn eyes Annette enjoying the look of pain on her face. "Still think he loves you?"

Annette shook her head "Your lying. Your just trying to play with my head so I'll let you go but it won't work. Your not leaving this room, ever. I'm getting rid of you so you can't hurt Sebastian anymore. Once your gone we can be happy together."

As Annette babbled Kathryn began loosening the ties that were holding her wrists. She could feel them coming lose she just needed another second. "Never going to happen."

"Oh, why?"

"Because Sebastian is in love with me."

Annette laughed "my aren't we confident. Tell me Kathryn has Sebastian ever told you he loved you?" Kathryn didn't say anything and Annette smiled "thought so. All you'll ever be to Sebastian is a good fuck, if that. I'm the one he loves your nothing more then the whore he lowers himself to be with."

All of a sudden Kathryn could feel the ropes come lose and she got up. "Ok enough of this shit, I'm out of here."

"I don't think so" Annette growled as she went after Kathryn. Kathryn had managed to get the ropes binding her legs free so she headed to the door. Annette immediately grabbed her and threw her to the floor. She straddled Kathryn and hit her across the face. Kathryn managed to knock her off of her and hit her back. "I'm not letting you out of here" Annette screamed.

"Get off of me!" Kathryn tried to push the girl off of her but couldn't. Annette reached for the gun which had fallen to the floor and pointed it at Kathryn. Kathryn grabbed for and the two began to fight over it. Two seconds later the gun went of and one of the girls went limp.

Summary: Sebastian finds a wounded Kathryn and takes her to the hospital.

Chapter 19: Another Chance

Sebastian heard the gun shot as soon as he got out of his car. At first it startled him and he thought it might have come from across the street, but he soon realized it came from his own house. He froze in fear, not for is own safety but Kathryn's. He had left his aunts home a short while ago and drove through every red light on the way there. The whole time he kept replaying in his head what Blain had told him. Annette. Suicide. Hospital. Obsession. When he first told him it didn't make sense, but as he drove certain thing started to come to together like a puzzle. Why Annette had left so suddenly, why she came back in the middle of the school year and why, after what he did to her she was more than willing to go out with him again. Sebastian had tried to call Kathryn several times but she wouldn't pick up. All of this caused him to believe that something bad had in fact happened.

The door was unlocked when he went in which was strange because Kathryn always locked it. He ran to her room and called out her name but he heard nothing, the house was completely silent. We have fifty people working here, where is everyone? As he approached Kathryn's room he saw someone in the shadows, he called out to them but they ran away. Sebastian was about to chase after them when he saw Kathryn.

She was on the floor and there was blood all around her. He immediately ran to her "Kathryn!" She looked at him for a second and he could tell she was about to pass out any minute. She was clutching her stomach and there was a small river of blood pouring out of her. "Kathryn, Kathryn it's Sebastian, look at me."

A quiet moan came out of her mouth as she tried to focus her eyes on him "Sebastian?"

"Yeah baby, it's me. What happened?" He tried to pull her hands away but she clutching herself too tight.

Kathryn's voice was barely a whisper "Annette she tried...oh god... Sebastian...it hurts."

Sebastian gently caressed her forehead "I know baby, I know. Just hold on a second I'm going to call for an ambulance." Sebastian quickly pulled out his cell phone and dialed 911. "I need an ambulance sent to 24 Park Avenue, my sisters been shot. No I'm not sure what happened, she's bleeding a lot, just hurry!"

"Sebastian?" Kathryn moaned.

"Yeah, I'm right here the ambulance is on the way. Kathryn I need you to stay awake, ok." She moved her head slightly as he watched the pool of blood around her get larger. "God, this is all my fault. I never should of...your going to be ok, I need you to be ok." He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. "Please just hold on for me, please. I love you."

* * * * * *

"Your daughter lost a severe amount of blood. If she got here a few minutes later she most likely would have died. Thank god you found her in time." Sebastian nodded his head at the doctor.

"But she's going to be all right?" Tiffani had just arrived a few minutes ago after Sebastian had tracked her down. He had been at the hospital all night waiting for the doctor to come out and tell him that Kathryn had made it.

"Yes, she has some internal damaged caused bye the bullet, but she should pull through all right."

"Thank god" Tiffani exclaimed. Sebastian himself felt like a enormous weight had been lifted.

"Would you like to go in and see her?"

"In a minute, I have to talk to my step son first." The doctor nodded then left. Tiffani turned to Sebastian "What exactly happened? The police said something about Annette Hardgrove. Who's Annette Hardgrove?"

Sebastian seriously didn't want to get into the whole story right then so he decided to give her bits and pieces. "Annette is dean Hardgroves daughter. We dated last summer then we broke up. She left New York and then came back recently and we started seeing each other again. To make a long story short...she thought me and Kathryn were involved."

"Aren't you?" The tone of Tiffani's voice was complete ice.

"Sort of, but it turns out she never really got over me and wanted me back. I guess she saw Kathryn as some sort of threat and she just snapped. After Kathryn left my aunts, Annette followed her home and I guess there was some sort of confrontation."

"I knew you two being together would be nothing but trouble, I warned Kathryn about it. But of course she never listens."

Sebastian rolled his eyes at his step mother "where's my father?"

"He's still in L.A."

"Nice, you would think he could at least bother to show up when his step daughter gets shot."

"He's not her step father anymore" Tiffani stated plainly.

"What are you talking about?"

"Me and your father got a divorce."

After the night Sebastian had had this news came as little surprise to him. He shook his head "is there a reason for it or did you to just get bored with each other."

Tiffani fixed him with an evil glare "it's really none of your concern Sebastian. We're divorced now which means I want your things out of my house."

"Whatever" he sighed. His attention immediately went to the police officer who was approaching them. Sebastian recognized him as the officer who showed up with the ambulance.

"Mrs. Mertuil, I'm officer Michaels I've been assigned to your daughters case. I thought you would like to know that we caught the young women responsible. She's confessed to shooting your daughter."

"Oh my god. I take it she's in jail?"

"Yes, she's pleading temporary insanity."

"There's nothing temporary about it" Sebastian scoffed.

"We already took your son's statement, we'd like to talk to your daughter more when she's feeling up to it."

"I suppose." The officer then left down the way he came and Sebastian studied Tiffani's worried expression. Could it be that she was actually worried about losing her daughter, Sebastian thought.

"God" she sighed "The press is going to have a field day with this. Can you imagine? Christ Kathryn really did it this time."

Or maybe not. Sebastian glared at Tiffani "your unfucking believable. Your daughter almost dies and all you can think about is how this is going to affect your reputation."

"All a women has is her reputation Sebastian. You have no idea the damage control I'm going to have to do, to repair the damage Kathryn has done. Well I suppose I should go call the Times and set the record straight."

Sebastian glared at Tiffani one more time before walking away. He went to Kathryn's room and knocked softly on the door even though it was open. Kathryn was now awake, laying in bed staring out the window. She looked so small and weak in the bed that Sebastian was almost hesitant to go in. "How are you feeling?"

Kathryn turned to him and gave him a small smile "I'm all right. The pain is small and the drugs help, as usual."

He smiled at the last comment as he took a seat next to her. "I just talked to the police. They caught Annette and supposedly she confessed. Hopefully they'll put her in jail instead of a psych ward."

"I don't know the girl needs industrial strength therapy. She was completely obsessed with you and having the perfect relationship."

Sebastian sighed "you know there's probably a lesson to be learned in all of this."

"And if we were better people with morals and all that we would probably learn it." Her wicked smile returned and he smiled back as they had done so many times before. They were coconspirators in every sense of the word. Two of a kind.

"Oh there's some other news. The rentals divorced."

Kathryn's eyes went large "you're kidding me. I guess your no longer my brother."

"Guess so, your mother already told me to pack my things."

"I suppose it's for the best." There was a moment of silence were neither knew what to say. Finally Kathryn broke it. "Look Sebastian, I wanted to thank you for what you did. If you hadn't come home early..."

"I rather not think about that. You scared me. I don't know what I would of done if anything happened to you."

"I think you would of gotten over it."

"No I wouldn't. Kathryn-"

She interrupted him "Sebastian you don't-"

"I love you" he blurted out. Kathryn's eyes once again went wide and then relaxed. She laid back against her pillow and stared straight ahead as if she was taking in all of this. He said it again "I love you. I think I always have, I could just never...I mean...what are you thinking?"

She finally faced him and her face was unreadable. "I don't want to do this now."

"Do what? Do you love me?"

"I don't...I don't know."

Sebastian felt as though he had been kicked in the gut. "Well I guess I have my answer then." He got up and headed to the door.

"Sebastian wait" she called out.

He turned around hoping she might tell him she loved him too but she just said "I'll talk to you later."

Sebastian nodded dully and walked out of the room.

* * * * * *

A week later Sebastian arrived at Blain's house to buy some merchandise. Since talking to Kathryn that night in the hospital Sebastian had not scene her at all. Several times he picked up the phone to call her but found it was just too painful. He had moved all of his things out of his former house and was now living in a posh penthouse with his father.

He hadn't really talked that much to Blain either in the past week so he had been surprised to see him at his front door. After paying for the weed and imported cigarettes Sebastian mumbled bye and headed for the door. "Hold on a second" Blain said "what exactly is going on with you?"

"What are you talking about, I'm fine."

"Bullshit. Your like a fucking zombie, what's wrong? Is this about Kathryn?"

"Why do you assume it as something to do with Kathryn?"

Blain laughed smugly "because it usually does."

"Fine, it is Kathryn. I did what you suggested, I told her I loved her and you know what she did?"

"I'm guessing it didn't go well."

"No it didn't go well. She completely blew me off. I asked her point blank if she loved me and she didn't say anything."

"Well can you blame her?"

Sebastian sighed not knowing why he was having this conversation with Blain "yes."

"Sebastian look at all the crap she's gone through, and most of it's because of you. First everything with Court, then the whole mess with Annette. I mean of course she's not going to jump right into your arms. On top of everything it's Kathryn. The girls not really big with the emotional stuff."

"Yeah well, neither am I."

"Yes which is precisely why you are perfect for each other. Have you talked to her at all since she got out of the hospital?"

"No" he admitted.

"Well why don't you go over there now and talk to her."

Sebastian realized Blain was right. If he wanted Kathryn he would just have to make her see that they were meant for each other. "Ok your right, I'm going over there now. Thanks Blain."

"Well that's why I'm here Valmont, to fix you life" he replied sarcastically. "Now where's my money?"

* * * * * *

A short time later Sebastian arrived at his former residence. The whole way over there he was thinking what he was going to say to Kathryn. In the end he just decided to wing it. The door man let him in and he was immediately greeted by Tiffani. "Oh Sebastian what are you doing here? I thought you got all your things last week."

"I did" he replied coldly to his ex-step mother. "I came to see Kathryn, is she around?"

Tiffani stared at him slightly before smiling "Kathryn's gone."

"Well will she be back soon?"

"Not likely. Kathryn went to France to finish up the school year. We both thought it would be a good idea if she left town for awhile in order to avoid more scandal."

Sebastian once again felt like he had been kicked in the gut. The superior look of Tiffani's face wasn't helping anything. "She didn't tell me."

"That's probably for the best. You two never really had a future together anyways."

"No" he replied sadly "no I suppose we didn't."
