THE
NEW SHMOO
Shmoo was
a strange creature created by illustrator/writer, Al
Capp,
for his "Li'l Abner" comic strip in the early 1950’s. Resembling a blob of white with eyes, mouth,
whiskers and two legs, that was
known to lay eggs and give milk. These
all purpose food sources lived
in the valley of the Schmoon. In
1979, Schmoo appeared in the NBC animated cartoon THE NEW
SCHMOO as an assistant
of three young reporters---The shy and smart Mickey, the strong but scary cat
Billy Joe and Nita the leader of the group, that became the first Hispanic woman
in cartoon history to appear as a leader in a show. They all worked for "Mighty Mysteries Comics".
Together, the foursome fought crime and investigated supernatural
goings-on. This series was created by the
Hanna Barbera Studios,
unfortunately
it didn’t work and only lasted 7 episodes ( 2
months).
Later the same cartoon was incorporated into the animated series FRED
AND BARNEY MEET THE SCHMOO / NBC / 1979-80, that later turned in
to
“The
Flinstones Comedy Show”, in which
Fred and Barney were Bedrock
Cops and Schmoo helped them to solved the
cases.
This show was very interesting and entertaining for the 6 segments it
had: Flintstone Family Adventures with further comic
misadventures of the Flintstones and Rubbles, Pebbles, Dino and
Bamm-Bamm with the trio solving various mini-mysteries, Captain Caveman
with Betty and Wilma as reporters being rescued by the
prehistoric superhero, Dino and Cavemouse, The Frankenstones and of
course Bedrock Cops with Fred and Barney partnered with the Shmoo
as part-time deputies. There were also
filler
segments in between the cartoons of the various characters doing games
and
puzzles for the viewing audience. After
the Flintstones Comedy Show no other version of the Schmoo character
has
been created.
