My name is Moya Derry and I was born in Newburgh, NY on 3/18/1968. I was diagnosed with PKU at just 2 weeks of age and was put on diet immediately. However, the doctor was going to keep me in the instition for close observations (5 years), but my mom researched as much as she could and proved to the doctor it was OK for her to take me home. My mom closely monitored me and measured every ounce of food/fluid I took in on a daily basis. I went to the specialist once a month so he can see how I was responding to the diet. And, I was taken off diet at 6 years of age. My parents were informed that it was OK to be off diet now and that nothing should happen to me. After being off diet for 30 years and I didn't even really know I had PKU until I was about 13. I grew up like as if I was any normal child, but I knew I had a disorder, but my mom never fully explained it to me, about what it was and what it could do. My parents explained all this to me when I was a teenager and this was the time in my life my mom thought I would understand it | |||||||||||||||||||
| all. Ever since I was off diet, I have always had a weight problem. I suffered in school with average/below average grades, but I managed to get my High School Diploma and went to College at a late age and recieved my AA Degree in Accounting in 1998. I now work in a secure Financial Institution (for the past three years with good benefits) where I process your basic Accounting/Bookkeeping entries for their monthly statements. I am single and never been married. I have no children. (That is another issue) I was in an abusive relationship for 9 years and one day God gave me all the strength I needed to finally leave him. I live on my own and keep involvedin Catholic Singles group in Tampa Bay. I like to try to meet as many people as I possibly can. I don't like staying at home all the time. My Mr. Right is out there somewhere, I just haven't found him yet. God hasn't given us our moment to meet. But, I know it will be soon...!!! I am in the process of getting back on diet right now and I am so looking forward to feeling a lot better physically/mentally. It is a challenge thought, but I know it will be for the best in the long run. I know it will be hard, I will just pray to God for strength so I can succeed. And, I WILL!! I am writing this because I wanted to share my story with you and thought you could post this on your message board to share with others.
