Serene
Oil on canvas
11 x 14 in.

Seren
e is an oil painting I began over a year ago and is still a work in progress.  I was almost finished when this picture was taken and then I put it in the drying rack in my school's painting studio.  I was very discouraged when I brought it out several weeks later to find someone or several someones had gotten paint all over it.

So... in the process of repairing it, I've had to re-do almost half of it, but it turned out to be for the good, because I am happier now with the result.  In the several weeks since I put it in the drying rack, I had been working on a larger scale piece and exploring the use of exaggerated color and light sources.  Upon returning to
Serene, I found that my painting style had changed quite a bit and the areas that had been damaged are now the stongest parts of the painting.

I don't think, however, that I will be working this small-scale in the future.  At a tiny eleven by fourteen inches, the brushstrokes are not as gestural as they could be because the smaller brushes are controlled with your fingers instead of your whole arm
.

A zoomed-in photograph of Serene's face may be found here.
