14And the Word became flesh, and
dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the
Father, full of grace and truth.
John
1:14
John, to my dear friends in Christ; in John 1:14 we have many
encouragements. In verse 14 we have "And the Word became
flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten
from the Father, full of grace and truth." Jesus Christ, the Word
(God), became flesh and dwelt on this earth. Imagine being asked by your father,
"Son (or daughter) I have many cats in the world and I desire to save them
through you. But you must become a cat, and sacrifice your life as a cat for
them through a horrible death. However, I will raise you up and you will lead
the cats for the rest of your life as a cat for my glory, and inside you will
still be human." You know, I can't imagine having enough love in me to give
up my entire life as a human for a bunch of cats. Going from being a human to
being a cat is a finite move that can be measured. But Jesus has so much love
for us that He went from being a Spiritual being to dwelling in the flesh of
man, a move that cannot be measured. Jesus, God, coming to us as a man and
to remain as a man is so awesome to me that I find it hard to describe it with
words, we are greatly blessed.
In the next part of the verse, "and we saw His glory", Jesus' glory, things God can only do and are not part of a normal person's life was seen in many ways; in His perfect sinless life (He was the only one who has had a perfect sinless life), miracles (too many to list, John 21:25"And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written."), closely following God the Father, and even during His transfiguration (Luke 9:28-36). The glory seen by the disciples was proof of Jesus' mission on this earth as the Messiah.
In the next part of the verse Jesus is described as "the only begotten from the Father", or another way of saying this is "Jesus is the One and Only Son of God." Sometimes words are used in the bible to describe something that cannot be described in human terms and begotten is one of those words. In this case begotten is used by John to describe something of the spirit realm in human terms, to tell us God has no other sons of Himself. But, God will have believers as sons and daughters by adoption as described in Ephesians 1:5, "He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will". This is an awesome promise of God for believers.
In the last part of the verse Jesus is described to be "full of grace and truth". This grace is the grace defined as a spiritual condition of being governed by the power of God. As we will find out later, Jesus does nothing without the Father showing Him the way John 5:19, "Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner." Finally, Jesus brings us the truth of God. Call Jesus message what you want, but it is the truth. In John 14:6 Jesus describes Himself as, "the way and the truth and the life". This truth revealed in Jesus Christ brings us everlasting life.
Dear Heavenly Father, what awesome encouragement we learned from one verse. We learned Jesus has so much love for us that He became like one of us, a man. We saw that Jesus is the One and Only Son of God, and despite the weakness of being a man, Jesus still reflected Your Grace and gave to us Your Truth. Help us to remember this and tell it to others we see around us, in Jesus name I Pray, Amen.
God's Many Blessings to You,
john
