1In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into
being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into
being. 4In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
5The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not
comprehend it.
John
1:1-5
John, to my dear friends in
Christ; last week we went over John
1:1-3, today we will continue
with John
1:4-5. In the first part of verse 4, "In Him was
life", when we looked at verse 3 we
learned all life was created through Jesus, so He is the source of our very
being and our very life is from Him. Also, Jesus is the source of eternal life
described by John in John 3:16 and written in
Romans 5:21, "so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign
through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our
Lord.". It is awesome to realize that not only
do we owe our very life to Jesus, but also our eternal life. In the second part
of verse 4, "and the life was the Light of men.".
Here, in the beginning of the Gospel of John, we see the link that the eternal
life from Jesus Christ is the Light that shines into man's innermost being to
expose his very nature of himself and the need he has for a Savior. Remember
friends what
it felt like? Being a sinful person with no way out of your sin and with nothing
to look forward to in the future. We have people all around us who feel
just as we did, tell them about the Light, and the freedom and
salvation they can have in Christ
Jesus.
The Light described in verse 4 is Greek for (phaos) which means light or daylight. Jesus is no little Light, He is the Daylight that shines the way to eternal life through Him. In verse 5, "The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.", the Greek word for darkness is (skotia) which stands for darkness or a darkness due to a lack of light. Jesus describes man's heart as evil and desires sin and desires to be left in the dark so his sins will not be seen as worthy of judgment, John 3:19, "This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.". Man's heart was so deep in darkness that they refused to allow the Light to illuminate their lives and change them through Jesus Christ. They refuse to look at or step into the Light because they do not want to see how evil they really are. The Bible has many examples of this and we know many people in our lives that refuse to look at the Light. Pray for them daily that the scales that cover their eyes would be lifted and they would desire to go to the Light.
This is only the beginning of the message about the Light, Jesus Christ, and the eternal life we have through Him. Awesome isn't it?
Dear Heavenly Father, what an awesome message we have today, Jesus is the source of our very life and eternal life. He is also the Light that shines in our darkness to expose our sin and the need we have of a Savior. Help us to love the Light more and more, and the darkness less and less everyday. When we see our unsaved friends and relatives remind us to tell them about the Light and eternal life in Jesus Christ, in Jesus name I Pray, Amen.
God's Many Blessings to You,
john
