She could tell. He stood in the open doorway of her motel room in his bare feet and comfy, cotton, plaid boxers watching the violent storm that whipped through the small, sleepy southern town they were trapped in. The rain pattered heavily against the tin overhang sheltering the walkway outside the door, creating a numbing, tapping rhythm and a constant whoosh sound as the wind blew strongly through the trees lining the parking lot. The crash of lightning and sudden white flash made her start as it outlined her partner with his arms outstretched on either side of the doorjamb, a silent observer to the storm. Thunder growled so loudly that Scully felt herself tense and wrap up in the sheet tighter. She wanted to go to him, but she didn't. She knew that stance. The tension evident in the long, elegant lines of his bare back. She'd seen him do this millions of times in their years together, only usually she read that particular set in his shoulders through his suit. He was mulling. Deeply disturbed by something. Anxious. Angry. Mulder could be dark when he wanted to. Unreadable. Even to Scully. She wondered what he was thinking. Was he regretting what had happened between them? Was he worrying about the future? Because she was. It had seemed so clear to her a few hours ago. Late night. Case over. Plane delayed by rain. Shared Pizza and bad t.v. Power outage. Candles. Conversation and confessions in the dark. Tears. Passionate Kisses... and then his harsh whisper, "Are you sure, Scully?" She had answered by pulling him to her and kissing the breath out of him. It had been all the encouragement he had needed. They had fallen asleep in each other's arms, but when she'd awoken she'd found him in his contemplative state. What was he thinking? Scully lay sideways on the bed, wrapped in the sheet and stared at his back. Her eyes wandered around the room to the trappings of their lives. Her laptop sitting dark on the tabletop in the corner, her suitcase open on the dresser. Her's and his guns sitting side by side on the nightstand. Everything looked the same, but she knew if she sat up she'd find her clothes tangled with his in a haphazard pile on the floor. Scully stared at the now burned out and melted candles sitting in a row on the dresser. Things would be different now. The thought scared her and suddenly she knew what he was thinking. Would things have to be different? Wait - Scully sat up in bed with her mouth slightly open as she suddenly realized - he wasn't worried about change. He was worried about things NOT changing. About her wanting to pretend this never happened. She wrapped the sheet tighter around her body and swung her legs over the side of the bed. Scully padded softly to stand at Mulder's back. "I won't," she said softly to him. He jumped a little, so lost in his own thoughts that he hadn't heard her approach. Mulder turned his head slightly to look at her. His eyes looked wounded, lost, a little angry. "What?" he returned in the same soft tone, but with an edge. The two of them spoke as though they were afraid of being caught, or being heard. Maybe they were scared that Fate would see their momentary happiness and dash it. "I won't go on like nothing happened. I won't," she said, meeting his dark gaze unblinkingly with her own steadfast blue eyes. "I love you, Scully," Mulder stated. There, he'd said it. A small smile quirked her mouth. "And you love me. I know you do," he added, with a little challenge in his voice. "Yes, I do," she nodded, still smiling. His brows jumped. "What did you just say?" "I said, you're right. I love you." "I was expecting an argument," he said, confused. She stepped under one of his arms so that they were both facing the storm outside and he lowered it from the doorjamb to rest a hand lightly on her back. "You won't get one from me. And, no, this didn't happen just because we're in close quarters and we care about one another. And, no, it wasn't a mistake." "It'll change things," he said solemnly, staring back out at the tumult outside. "I hope so," Scully countered and he huffed in surprise. "And it's about time," she added and tiptoed up to kiss him as lightening flashed and burned their mingled silouettes on the wall behind them. ********************************************************************** ******************** Ok, this just LITERALLY popped into my head while listening to Moby's "The Sky Is Broken."
