Todd's Sexuality
2003-2004 - Peak of 14 million Viewers
Review by: willhung

IN 2004 and for the first time in its 44 year history, Coronation Street introduced its first ever gay character. Whilst most soaps introduce a character for the immediate purpose of a big storyline, Corrie surprised us all when it was announced young Todd Grimshaw would be seen struggling with his sexuality in forthcoming storyline. "How will they do it?" "They're turning him gay?" "Thats madness, he's with Sarah!" people cried. However, in October 2003 the seeds for Corrie's biggest storyline in 04 were well and truly planted when Todd kissed or well tried to kiss his fiance Sarah Louise Platt's brother Nick!

"Is that it?" "Thats not a kiss!" "That doesn't make him gay!" we all cried after the episode. Corrie's first ever "gay kiss" was a complete non event. "Wrong Move Todd!" Nick said and proceeded to inform Sarah Louise, later to be dubbed Donkey by gay and straight Corrie fans alike, about her fiancee's locking of the lips with him on the couch. Sarah and Todd split for a while, this in turn introduced a psycho granny who kidnapped Sarah's kiddie Bethany in which we all focused on before getting down to the real big storyline.

Fast forward to early 2004 and the arrival of gay male nurse Karl Foster, a friend of Martin's from the hospital. Todd as luck would have it had just begun working at the hospital and was steaming ahead in his plans to wed Sarah Lou and get up her up the duff, prove he was a "real man" When Todd found out Karl was gay, his gaydar went into overdrive and he found himself trying to resist the charms of the handsome nurse, who by his own admission fancied Todd "like crazy".

Easter 2004 and we're all off to Canal Street for a Monday night double of Corrie. Karl's brithday bash would see Todd open the closet door and step out, even if just for a moment or two. Feeling awkward in the club Todd again tried to run away from the truth only to be confronted by Karl outside. This lead to Corrie's first ever real gay kiss and a full blown affair was soon to follow.

May 2004: Todd has dumped Karl and devoted himself to Sarah. However in a fit of despair he spills his guts to mum Eileen who almost tells Sarah herself about her sons sexuality. After a tension filled dinner at the Platts, Gail and Audrey bring Todd and Sarah Lou to view the church where their wedding is to be held. Feeling the walls closing on him, Todd finally bites the bullet in a Sunday night episode, the prelude to a Monday triple bill to be dubbed Corrie Fight Night!

"I can't marry ye Sarrer.....I'm gay!" The first of Monday's episode picked up with Todd elaborating on that earth shattering admission. Sarah Lou now heavily pregnant tries to brush it off as a phase. Really love, are you really that thick? It soon dawns on Sarah its not a phase and she soon lays into her gay fiancee. Todd's second revelation about his affair with Karl......in their bed! "How dare you lie to me!" screams Sarah as they proceed to fight, with poor Bethany in the next room. Sarah packs her bags and with Todd begging her to stay, vowing to never go with another man again, that he loves her, she leaves him as the first of the treble ends.

The 2nd episode, Fred is leading Our Kid into a taxi whilst Sarah Louise Platt and daughter Beth make their way to mum Gails house. Back at the flat, Todd Grimshaw sobs as his fiancee has left. Back at the Platts Sarah collapses in Gail's arms and tells her everything, the affair, him being gay and now calling off the wedding. Gail vows to have it out with Todd but Sarah says she's been through enough. Todd meanwhie makes his way to Eileen's in which he hides out. Later, we see Gail peering out her window across as the Grimshaws, only to find Todd peering back at her. A furious Gail in nightgown an all runs across the cobbles to have it out with Todd.

The Street comes to a standstill as Gail bangs down the Grimshaw door, revealing Todd's secret to the world. After unsuccessful attempt calm her down, Eileen belts Gail after Gail shrieks that Todd is "A twisted little pervert!" "raaaaaaahhh" a war cry from Gail and she is hanging out of Eileen's hair, as the two women wrestle on the cobbles with much hair pulling and some of the best lines of the entire storyline. Todd pulls them apart and in one last departing shot, Gail tells Jason "he's gay!" to which Todd replies "Its true" Jason walks off leaving Todd in despair.

The third of the treble takes place the day after the Coming Out. Jason has stayed out all night not wanting to share a room with this gay brother. This episode sees Fred Eilliot and Ashley rumble Our Kid as not some Thai Bride, but some Mancunian market seller. Back on the Street Todd tries to talk to Sarah which results in yet another fist fight. Nick and David Platt seize the opportunity to belt Todd by pinning him to a car. Although Nick clearly couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag, Jason Grimshaw breaks it up with Nick getting a thick lip for his troubles. The end of the episode Todd is left in tears when Jason says "You're a dirty queer and I want nothing to do with you" The fight night over, the secret is out, his fiancee gone, Todd stands alone in the Street, alienated by everyone apart from his goddess mother Eileen.
