Website Updates - I have added Game pictures
for Varsity through Bel Air and will finish the Socorro
page soon. I added picture pages for JV games vs. Gadsden
and Chapin. The schedules have also been updated for all
three teams and contain links to the game pictures according to the game (Varsity
& JV only). I will make picture pages for JV and Freshman games
vs. Bel Air and Socorro once I receive them from Mrs. Carmen
Hernandez who's been nice enough to take pictures when I can't be
there because of work.

District Games for the 2004 Football Season begun
last week as the T-Birds battled the Bel Air Highlanders on Thursday at
Coronado. The Varsity team heads to Socorro this week in what will be an exciting game and hopefully a Victory for the
Coronado Football Team.

-
Coronado Football practices started on Monday the 9th of August and
with school beginning on Monday the 16th of August, it is officially
football season. The team has worked extremely hard these past weeks
and looks to have a great season. Although ranked #4 by
THSF.com and #6 by
5ATexasFootball.com in the District, Coronado looks to be among the
top teams in El Paso and surpass all expectations

Varsity vs. Chapin - An amazing battle in
which the T-Birds seemed to have lost control of the game after
leading 14 - 0, letting the Huskies score 20 unanswered points, and
then come back for the win in the last seconds. The Coronado team
looked good, but as Coach Brooks said, "We could've been better." We
shouldn't have put ourselves in the position of having to score to win,
but when it came time to do so, the offense stepped it up and the kicker
Juan Munoz capped it off. With 14 seconds left on the clock,
the field-goal put the T-Birds up 27 - 26 and gave them the first
Victory of the season. The Chapin game was the last Pre-Season game
and so District play will begin next week as we compete against the
Bel Air Highlanders.
-
Freshmen and JV vs. Chapin - The Freshmen
game was a great battle and although the T-Birds had a couple of mistakes
throughout the game, they came out with the a winning score against the
Huskies of 12 - 6. The JV game was an exciting,
nail-biting game with went back-and-forth between teams and ended in a
disappointing, but satisfactory, tie of 20 -20. The Coronado
offense had the Huskies beat offensively, but turnovers (INTs and
fumbles) totally killed the good momentum the team had. The
T-Birds seemed to be the better team, but in the end it came out as a
draw.
-
Freshmen and JV vs. Mayfield - The
Freshmen lost in a blow-out by a great Mayfield team with the
score of 46 - 6. The JV lost an extremely close game
which was decided by a mere field-goal. The T-Birds had the Trojans
beat at the beginning, but it was Mayfield that came up on top
giving the Coronado JV a loss of 8 - 11.
-
Varsity vs. Midland - The Coronado team could
not do anything to the impressive Permian Basin team during this meet.
The Midland offense was amazingly fast and was able to create good running
with a total of 8 different backs. Coronado's offense, at times,
looked as though they might drive down for a touchdown, but interceptions
and a fumble killed the momentum. The Dawgs beat the T-Birds in this
game with a score of 49 - 0.
-
Varsity vs. Carlsbad - A game in which
Coronado did well but in the end errors and turnovers led to a
heartbreaking loss of 14 - 20. The T-Bird Defense did very well and
held the Cavemen to many 3 and outs but giving up good field position
eventually hurt the Coronado team. The game ended on a Coronado
offensive drive which had many promises of leading to a touchdown and
victory for the Thunderbirds, but the clock ran out as the offense was
just 10 yards from the TD.
-
Scrimmages vs. Gadsden
- The Freshmen, JV, and Varsity Football teams scrimmaged Gadsden on
August the 21st in preparation for the upcoming football season. The
Freshmen came out victorious with a 14 - 0 score in a game that
seemed one-sided. The JV team also won their match with a
score of 14 - 7 in an exciting game. The Varsity played a
great game in which it came out victorious with a 21 - 0 win.
Although plagued with self-deprecating errors, the Coronado team did not
give up and kept on playing hard; eventually leading to the Victory.
-
Coronado 7-on-7 Tournament - Friday the 9th
of July - Coronado was host to a 7-on-7 Tournament in which it went
undefeated with a 3-0 record for the day. The Coronado Football Team
played and won against Clint, Chapin, and El Paso high.
