CHOROGRAPHY OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF PEÇANHA
About the Work:
A small Chorography, a true
jewel of this kind of Literature, with a short report about the History,
the Geography, and other Economical and Social data of the city of Peçanha,
municipality that stays in the East of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the headwaters
of the rivers of the Sweet River Valey [Vale do Rio Doce], written in
the year of 1899, and published in the Magazine of the Public Archives
of Minas Gerais [Revista do Arquivo Público Mineiro],
volume VI, year of 1901, part I, at pgs. 113-116.
The great merit of this tiny work is to portrait one forgotten period
of the brazilian History, not only of the city of Peçanha, MG,
Brazil, but also of the settlement of the Atlantic Wood [Mata Atlântica],
in the interior of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in a territory occupied by indigenous
tribes still savage, some cannibal, as the frightening "botocudos".
Jeronymo Electo de Souza
About the Author:
Jeronymo Electo de Souza was born in the beginnings of the 19th century, about 1810-1820, in a non-identified locality of the North of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Still in the years of 1862-1863, one find him as businessman, paying the taxes of his store, in the locality called Saint Michael [São Miguel], belonging to Serro, MG, Brazil. Later, in the years 1865-1866, one find him with his business open in the Village of Saint Anthony of Peçanha [Arraial de Santo Antônio do Peçanha], MG, Brazil. He exercised many offices in the local administration. He had the rank with Liutenant [Tenente] of the National Guard [Guarda Nacional]. He has been a farm and businessman. He donated private property, to installing the Town [Vila], criated by the law of 1875, and instaled in 1881, year in which also it was elevated to City [Cidade]. There, Jeronymo married, in first weddings, about the year of 1855, from which consortium he had four children, and in second weddings, about 1875, of whose matrimony he had two children.
