| An emulator is a program that tries to mimic (emulate) consoles. For example, your computer and a NES are completely different, from the software they use, to inside the machine. What a NES emulator does is make your computer work more like a NES, allowing it to play NES games. Of course, it doesn't work perfectly, so you might meet some bugs.
