JACKPOT RANGE
After the introduction of the Cornfield range, the airforce needed one more
practice area.
An area on Terschelling , the neighbour island from Vlieland , was bought.
The area was called Noordvaarder but it was better known by the pilots as Jackpot. In 1956 the range was taken into service and the first excercises began.
The range was a lot smaller than Cornfield , so there only could be practiced with

practice ammunitions. But nevertheless it fulfilled an importand role.
Just as on the Cornfield range in the beginning the Jackpot range struggled
with some problems , but they were solved when the time passed by.
With the movement of the strafe target the control tower got raised , so the personnel working on the tower got a better view at the strafe targets. The strafe target had to be moved because ricochettes hitted the tower on a regular basis.
Unforntunately the range could never celibrate its 40th anniversary.Due to reorganisations and shrinking , the range got deactivated in 1995.
The range got thoroughly cleaned and the control tower got demolished. After that nothing was left that remembered of the presence of the airforce for almost 40 years.
