Installing a modem
Introduction
Installation modems in Linux is not always easy. NEVER buy
a winmodem and if it is posible:
So I did and got a: pci modem card - "E-tech faxmodem 56k (type: PCI56AVP)".
But of course it was not so easy to install the modem. After a litle while I notice there
where 3 modem types:
a A, a B and a C version of the PCI56AVP.
See also the site of the manufacterer on www.e-tech.nu where you find information about the type of modem.
So there should be drivers. But only for the A modem type. Not for B en not for my C-type.
But they advertise with: including drivers also for Linux
and this is also done for the C-type.
Nice to know but NO driver of course.
After looking on the internet for a long long period where I also visited the lastpage on the internet I got a hint which point me into the right direction. And this was the solution for my driver problem. Of course when I found it there where lots of bells ringing! Someone wrote that the modem was compatible with a Intel536.
The solution
So I opened the pc and checkt the modemcard. Indeed all the chips where Ambient chips
from Intel. So I go to: www.intel.com directly
clicked on "Support & Downloads" and searched for intel536.
I found a lot of drivers for Linux
- Red Hatand for a lot of versions. But only for 2.4 Kernels I think.
- Mandrake
- Suse
- ...
In my case I downloaded the version for Red Hat 9.0
(Intel536ep-460-1-R90.tgz version: 4.60.1) for the Intel 536EP Chipset Family
Unzip and un-tar the file, read the instructions and within a few minutes
you can work within Linux with your new modem.
