The Self-Awareness of Carrots
by Lois June Wickstrom
earth hugs my cylinder
as I expand my tendrils
silly worms slither by
not knowing the dirt
falls in upon their trails
my green fronds beckon
poor skittering air dwellers
who leave no trail of life
Here I AM fellow plants!
welcome to my garden
those who move thoughtlessly
above and below, in air or soil
cannot know the majesty
of sucking goodness from the mud
or the true rootedness of self
