Dakota, a black Tan doe, was born on June 27th, 2002. She had a very rough start: her three siblings and her were born on the wire bottom of their cage because the breeder wasn't aware the mom was pregnant, so there was no nest box available. Only two of the four survived the night - Dakota and her sister. The two and their mom were brought to my work (at a farm) to find homes. However, this little one wasn't even expected to live to the age of two weeks; the top of her head was very large and rounded, and she squeaked a lot more than her sister. Two weeks came and went, with the sisters hanging on together. Not long after, her littermate was passing her up, becoming twice her size...not to mention a lot fatter. My coworkers and I took action, feeding her twice a day for about two weeks with KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer) and pure warmed goat milk. Though some people who didn't think she would make it wanted to "put her down" -sadly-, a little hope, love, her real and "adopted mothers", KMR, and goat's milk...and her strong will to survive kept her alive, and six weeks later she joined my family. She is now beautiful, healthy, and very energetic. |
