I bought a few Genetically Altered Zebra Danios for my wife from a fish store in my neighborhood and instantly feel in love with them. There flashy neon colors paired with quick swimming schools make the tank brilliant. I have found it hard to find much information on them or the original strand of Danio rerio so I figured that the handful of people who happen to read this page will at least be able to learn from my experiences. I feed the adults tropical fish flakes with ingredients consisting mostly of meat products. Every once in awhile I give the adults brine shrimp as a treat, they seem to enjoy them. I vacuum the tank every 3 to 4 days to keep the water fresh and the nitrate level low. My danios are not shy and are very quick to investigate my hands when I dig in the tank to fix decorations or even simple vacuuming.
The same is set up in the fry tank, where one of my red fish breed with a green one, 12 red and 2 green have survived thus far. I am using a sponge filter for the fry as to not have my fry sucked into the filter. I purchased special fry food which seem to be ground into a fine powder. I clean and vacuum my fry tank every 2 to 3 days due to the large number of fish in a ten gallon tank. A few are almost big enough to survive a more powerful filter so I will be able to start moving some of the fry soon. Considering how easy it was to not only get these fish to mate, but to also care for the fry once they hatch I may consider breeding them in the future to obtain brighter colored fish.
