LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FOR MICHAEL W. BURRIS

Four years ago, I decided in a moment of inspiration that I would like to learn to play drums, and that is how I met Michael Burris. Since then, Mike has been my teacher, and I have also had the opportunity to work with him as an editor for his book about drumming and instruction and to play with his community drumming group, Krakatoa.

Mike is truly a unique individual because he demonstrates outstanding qualities in using both sides of his brain—a combination I’ve rarely seen. The “left-brain Mike” is an extremely creative musician who strives to achieve his personal best and is dedicated to helping others discover their talents and achieve their goals through inventive teaching methods that he develops. The “right-brain Mike” is a very detail-oriented individual who is able to find structure in music and other projects and has an unwavering drive to complete any project he undertakes to the best of his ability.

I’ve seen Mike’s determination at work when he is challenged to learn something new–he will figure it out, and he will make it happen! Mike’s organizational skills are evident in his writing and in his very comprehensive Web site on drumming techniques. I know that he also has quite a bit of training and background in the technical/computer field, and Ihave seen him put that experience to use in these projects as well.

In addition to taking private lessons from Mike, I’ve observed how he teaches other drummers during Krakatoa practice sessions. He is a wonderful mentor, always pushing his students to do their best but at the same time exhibiting great patience, caring, and understanding. Teaching can be learned, but a really good teacher has a gift, and Mike Burris has that gift. His love of teaching is evident in the boundless enthusiasm, energy and joy he exhibits when helping others learn and playing music with them, even when they are beginners. His positive attitude is truly inspiring to his students and friends alike.

Finally, I can attest that Mike Burris is a person of character and is honest and straightforward in how he deals with others. For all of these reasons, I know that anyone who hires him will find they have made a great decision.
