A Home Improvement WebQuest for Geometry L
Grades 9-12

INTRODUCTION
Mrs. Jones has recently renovated her garage by converting it into rooms for her two sons.  Each of the boys has a bedroom, and there is a Chillin Room where the boys will watch television, play PlayStation, and listen to music.  She is looking for an interior decorator to help find the best paint/wallpaper, carpet, and furniture.  Your name has been given to her as a prospective decorator.  As her interior decorator, you and your partner will need to choose colors, designs, styles, & products that will be most appropriate for boys that are 5 & 9 years old.  I will need a list of your decisions along with a detailed price list.

THE TASK
First you need to pick which room you want to decorate (5-year old bedroom, 9-year old bedroom, or Chillin Room).

Next, you will need to examine the Scale Drawing in order to calculate the perimeter of the room and the area.  Then you will need to choose products that you think would be best for the boys and with the best prices.  You will need to do the following for the room:

-carpet/tile/wood on the floor
-paint and/or wallpaper the walls
-choose furniture and accessories

Remember, I will be looking for the appropriateness of the items you choose and the price.  You will be required to give me a proposal of your suggestions that includes a detailed price list for all items with a description and picture.  The price list must include unit prices (for example, price per square foot), quantity needed, total prices, tax, and any applicable shipping & handling charges.   The way you will put you proposal together is your decision.  For example, you can do a collage, a written report, a drawing, a PowerPoint presentation, or a newspaper article.  Be creative and have fun!!!

THE PROCESS
In order to complete this task you will need to complete each of the steps listed below.

1.  Please PRINT this whole webquest so that you can look back at it as you work.

2.  Look at the SCALE DRAWING then fill in the DATA SHEET by calculating the perimeter of the room and the area of each wall, ceiling, and floor.  Remember, when doing these calculations you will need to take into consideration any doors and windows.  Make sure you keep these dimensions handy (print your data sheet), because you will need them when figuring the amount of supplies you will need.  Remember, most ceilings are 8 feet high.

3.  Research items & prices. (Look back at the TASK area for more info).  You will need to use the list of links below to buy flooring (tile, vinyl, carpet, or wood), paint and/or wallpaper for the walls/ceiling, and furniture for the rooms.

4.  Choose the products you want to include in your proposal.  Make sure you list where you chose the suggested items (the website), how much each item costs (including shipping charges), and how much you need of the product (for paint, wallpaper and flooring).

5.  Put your proposal together. You may choose how to present your proposal (poster, powerpoint, commercial, written report, etc.).  Make sure your proposal includes the following:
· all dimensions (length and width)
· prices, descriptions, & pictures of all items (when possible), and
· places to purchase the items.

PAINT

For help estimating how many cans of paint to buy, find the area of the walls you want to paint, then DIVIDE by how much each gallon of paint will cover (about 400 square feet).

Paint cannot be bought online, so if you want to use paint, choose a color or colors from Mrs. Corder’s samples.  Good paint is usually about $25 per gallon, and for two little boys, you should get semi-gloss paint, which is easy to clean off!

WALLPAPER – don’t forget to figure out how many rolls you need (i.e., find the area of the walls you plan to cover and DIVIDE by the amount the roll of wallpaper will cover).

After successfully completing this WebQuest, you will have applied your understanding of area & perimeter to a real-life situation.  Not only have you used you mastery of linear & square measurement, but you have also calculated prices including taxes, shipping & handling.  As a final step for this WebQuest, you need to respond to the following two items on a separate sheet of paper.

1) What are some of the things you liked about this project, and what are some of the things you disliked?

2) If you could go back and re-do this WebQuest, what would you do differently to make your proposal better?

You should be very proud of yourself as I know that I am proud of each of you!!!
