Lists and reports from the Grand Lake St. Mary's area
Here you'll find bird reports from my trips to Grand Lake St. Mary's and the
surrounding areas. For those un familiar with the area, it's a huge lake in
west central Ohio. It was initially built to serve as a reservoir for the
Miami-Erie Canal, but now is home to a multitude of wildlife.
It's migration time!
Sightings for the Month of April :
We opened up our place two weeks ago. We have seen quite a bit of
waterfowl, such as: Bufflehead, American Wigeon, Northern Shoverlers,
Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Ducks, a female Red-breasted
Merganser. We have also seen Horned Grebes, Pied-billed Grebes,
multitudes of Canada Geese, Great Blue Herons and American Coot. We
have also seen a Great Egret. The best news of all is that a pair of
Bald Eagles are nesting near the Mercer State Wildlife Area which is
near Montezuma on the south side of the lake. Last year, their nest was
blown down during a thunderstorm, so they have taken over yet another
heron nest smack dab in the middle of a heron rookery. I saw an Eastern
Phoebe and heard a Gray Catbird. We also heard a Great-horned Owl late
one night when we were fishing by a campfire... talk about great
atmosphere!
We took a side trip to the reservoirs in Lima this past Saturday. We
saw Ruddy Ducks, and Grebes (a Red-necked Grebe was seen there the week
before) and six Common Loons, all in full breeding plumage. What a
grand sight that was.
