Ileostomy Bumps
The nice thing about Windows is that it doesnt just crash, it displays a nice little dialog box and lets you press OK first!
Many ileostomates become understandably concerned when they see the appearance of small bumps on the formerly smooth surface of the stoma. These bumps may enlarge to a quarter-inch size warty mass and even interfere with application of the faceplate. These bumps are more correctly termed "granulation tissue" and are similar to the "proud flesh" that occasionally occurs after injury to the skin. Granulation tissue is a normal defensive reaction of the body to injury. The inside surface of the bowel was never meant to reside on the outside of the body as an ileostomy stoma and it lacks the resilience of the skin in every day minor injuries. The rubbing of the appliance, particularly if it is too small, may provoke this granulation tissue reaction. The encounter with skin bacteria is not normally found inside the bowel may cause a defense reaction, leading to granulation tissue. The best treatment is to ignore these bumps if they are small and do not interfere with the ileostomy function. Large wart-like masses or granulation tissue can be cut or burned off easily if causing problems. Before wincing, don't forget --- the stoma is almost completely insensitive to pain! via Victoria Ostomy Chapter Island Ostomy News & Metro Halifax News & Snohomish Co INSIGHTS
