There's a bridge that spans the Paulinskill River in Knowlton Township, New Jersey, in a little section called Polkville. It's awed me ever since I saw it the very first time. You round the curve of a tiny little road and there it is...rising up in all its majesty, seemingly out of nowhere. It carries the now defunct railbed of the once vital rail line that went through this area from the cities to the east into Stroudsburg and further west. It's amazing to see what could be built back at the turn of the century by the labor force of the day, typically immigrant Italians, with the heavy equipment available to them at the time...most frequently their bare hands.
