Archery Merit Terms
Anchor point A fixed position against
the body that the hand is brought to when pulling the string.
Arm guard This
is a piece of leather that is strapped to the arm to protect the skin from
abrasion caused by the string when released.
Bow arm The arm of the hand that
holds the bow (Your arm)
Bow weight The amount of force
required to draw a bow the release point
Bowyer Someone who makes bows.
Brace height Also known as the string
height, it is the distance between the string and the bow when in the rest
position.
Cast The speed and distance
that a bow can shoot an arrow.
Deflexed bow A bow in its relaxed or unstrung
position.
Draw Pulling the bow string.
Draw length The distance the string
of a bow is pulled back from its starting point.
End The specific number of
arrows shot before the archers go to the target to retrieve the arrows and count
the score.
Finger tab Similar to an arm guard
but used to protect the finger pads.
Glove Another name for the
finger tab.
Longbow This is the oldest style
of bow design. It is distinguisher by a
consistent curve from end to end.
Matched arrow This is an arrow that
has been matched in weight length and straightness to other arrows.
Quiver A tube shaped container
or clip type device that is used to hold arrows
Recurve bow A bow
whose tips are curved in the opposite direction of the string.
Reflexed bow A bow that appears bent
backwards when unstrung. It does not
necessarily have recurved limb tips.
Release Letting go of the
string.
Round The number of ends shot
at designated distances and target sizes to obtain a standard score.
Tiller A measure of even
balance between the 2 limbs of a bow.
