I plan to use the following website for ESL students as I feel that it will strengthen their language skills as well as help them with areas within the curriculum.

Topic: Spanish Explorers of North Carolina

NCSCS Social Studies Objectives:

1.2 Describe the origins and characteristics of major groups that settled in North Carolina and assess

their influence on North Carolina customs.

1.3 Analyze similarities and differences among North Carolina's people, past and present.

2.3 Analyze economic, social, and political situations which involve ethical and moral dilemmas.

6.1 Trace the movement of people, goods, and ideas from one part of the state to another and between

North Carolina and other places.

6.2 Compare ways in which people, goods, and ideas moved in the past in North Carolina with their movement today.

6.3 Judge the importance of the movement of people, goods, and ideas for North Carolina.

12.1 Identify people, symbols, and events associated with North Carolina's heritage.

12.2 Assess the influence of an important event from North Carolina's past on life today.

Materials: Computers, Language Translation Software, Construction Paper for booklets

Procedures: Students will use the Internet, research books, etc. to conduct a search of Spanish explorers that

have traveled through North Carolina.

Students will then create a booklet on the Spanish Explorer.

The booklet must contain at least four sources that the student has used during the research.

The booklet must contain one letter written from the explorer's point of view. The letter must be

in Spanish using the English to Spanish translation. Also, a copy of the English letter must be

included.

Booklet should be checked for spelling and grammar using the spell check on the word processor.

Students should include a list of resources used at the end of the booklet.

Assessment: I will assess the students on the accuracy of their information on the explorer and whether or not they

followed the guidelines given.
