REGGIE
Do we trust her?
The creature gurgles a soft response. Reggie nods.
REGGIE
You're absolutely right.
INT. STUDY -- MORNING
Reggie enters Koon's study. The medieval looking room resembles a throne room more than a study. Koon sits in his lavish chair toward the back of the massive room near the wall of windows. He has the appearance of a king sitting on his throne. A smug smile adds to the illusion. Reggie pauses midway across the room near the massive desk. Dylan Creature creeps in behind her in an attempt to hide his massive body from being noticed. Koon indicates the chair several feet away from him. Reggie eyes him with distrust and reluctantly sits. Dylan Creature hides behind her chair and peers out.
KOON
Since my brother amused himself by granting your brother's assistance in the
challenge, I've decided to raise the stakes.
REGGIE
I didn't agree to that.
KOON
Nor did I agree to your brother teaming with you. The challenge will be the same.
You must find the dagger and return it to the castle. You will have twenty-three
hours to complete the task. There will be no maps. It's hidden within the old pirate
ship along the coast on the far end of the island. You can't walk the beach the entire
distance. There is a rock ledge that prevents passage. You must travel through the
center of the island.
(pause)
The rules are--there are no rules.
REGGIE
What's to stop you from transporting me back here the moment I reach the
pirate ship?
(pause)
You have the ability to stop me with the snap of your fingers. I can't compete
against that.
KOON
Fair enough. I am not permitted to use my powers to prevent you from completing
your task. The dagger must be inside the castle before the end of the twenty third
hour. It just has to pass through the doorway. We'll keep it simple to avoid any
misunderstandings.
(pause)
If you do return the dagger to the castle within the allotted time period, your brother
will be restored to his mortal state and both of you will be returned to your home as
if none of this had ever happened. But if you don't complete your task, your brother
remains as he is, and you will replace Chrissy as my mistress--for all eternity.
Reggie stares at Koon a long moment. Her expression remains unchanged.
REGGIE
What happens to Chrissy?
KOON
I suppose she'll carry out her life sentence elsewhere in my kingdom.
Reggie appears tense, shifts uncomfortably, then glares at Koon.
REGGIE
I guess you have upped the stakes. Sounds a little unbalanced to me.
(pause)
I'd assume eat bugs the rest of my life then be your mistress.
Koon appears insulted and sneers. His warped smile soon returns.
KOON
That can be arranged.
(pause)
Do you have a counter offer?
REGGIE
If I lose, I will assume Chrissy's position by your side only if she is returned to
her former life--along with my brother.
Koon stares at Reggie a long moment. He appears slightly surprised then chuckles lowly.
