| A.E. Roy apparently sold ice and aerated waters in Hay NSW until the business closed in 1907. Alfred E. Roy is first mentioned in Cootamundra in 1909 when he purchased the 'Crown Bakery' from W. Wallis and Sons. The Wallis family then concentrated on the sale of fruit, cordials and refreshments. (Hence the later name of his aerated water factory - 'Crown Brand') In July 1910 the W.J. Wallis offered his fruit and confectionary business for sale - the following month Roy bought the confectionary stock. Two months later Alf installed one of the new Nelson Carbonators, that would quickly produce aerated waters - upto 60 dozen an hour if necessary. His new product was offered wholesale or retail. An added attration was a bottling machine that during the summer months passed the drinks through an "ice chest", rendering them cold. His business advertised as the White Refreshment Rooms. (Mr Wallis meanwhile moved to Stockinbingal where he leased the Stockinbingal Hotel) By 1912 A.E. Roy was still involed in the bakery trade. In 1913 an Australian Rules football club was formed in Cootamundra with Alf as secretary and his son or brother R.Roy a player.. 1913 also saw the sale of Alf's bakery and refreshment room to A.E. Gill on the 1st of October. Alf retained his cordial factory in Thompson St, which later that month advertised Christmas cordials, dandelion ale, ginger beer and lemonade in the name of Roy Bros. Only one bottle is known to exist - a broken example held by Peter Cash. The bottle is embossed - A.E. ROY COOTAMUNDRA CROWN BRAND WATERS NSW |
