The following is a list of those chemists that had their own bottles:

CHEMISTS

E.C. Mooney  - 2 sizes of bottle known

A.A. Dobbie (1940s - 1950s)  - 2 sizes of bottles known

L.W. Ballhausen (1918 - 1924) - 2 sizes of bottles known (one in a blue tint glass)

L.V. Solomon (1918 - 1924) - 2 types of bottles known (1 of these in two sizes).   One type had block and running embossed script:  'CHEMISTS - L.V. SOLOMON -COOTAMUNDRA'

Solomon also sold 'Pinettes' for coughs, bronchitis and colds. These pastilles were sold in a tin can. A photo is shown below.

Weymouth (1940s - 1950s) - Used paper labels only.

Dinsmore (1940s - 1950s) - bottle known.   His father was a chemist in Temora NSW


Edmund Verney Chilcott (1879 - 1902)  - 4 sizes of bottle known.   Made by W.T. & Coy USA

E.V. Chilcott took over Henley's Drug Store (and also extracted teeth) in 1879.
In 1880 he was operating from Premises between the Herald Newspaper and London House, before settling in what is now 265 Parker St in two storey premises.  Over the years, his children took turns falling from the balcony  of this shop, never with any serious injury.

In 1884  Chilcott ran for appointment as an alderman, however it wasn't until 1885 that he was successful.

1891 saw the inauguration of a Rechabite Lodge.  'The oldest temperance benefit society extant', established a Tent of Manoah with tent chemist E.V. Chilcott.

On 19 Oct 1892 the Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed.  Chilcott was a member of the committee and among the first volunteers.  Subsequently a 1st Lieutenant.

Mrs Chilcott and a Mrs Sanderson established a Benevolent Society in the town in 1893.

Chilcott's eldest daughter became Sister M. Benedict in the Order of Sisters of Mercy in the local convent in 1901.

Finally in 1902 Chilcott moves to Sydney after 23 years in town.   His business was sold to Mr C.E. Newman (265 Parker St).  Sold to C.G. McIntosh in 1904.

Edmund's son, Verney Chilcott who was born in Cootamundra on 23 Oct 1887 enlisted into the Australian Army on 9 July 1940 in Paddington NSW.  Service number N76186.  He served until 14 Aug 1940 in the Canteens Service. (One month service)  His next of kin was shown as Jessie Chilcott.

Duff (Late 1930s ?) - Clear glass bottle used with 3 lines of text: DUFF / CHEMIST / COOTAMUNDRA
High on the shoulder is 3 VIII and under the base the modern
A,G,M  with the G and M  within the A, The A is the long left legged type.

Eucalyptus Bottles

J.V. Johnson (1894 -      )  Round bottle 4" high x 3/4" wide.  


Colemane & Sons (1885 - 1912?) 'Tree of Life' brand. No known bottles.  Used paper labels only.  A eucy ointment pot lid approximately 2 1/2" wide is known to exist.  A black and white drawing can be seen in Robert Kiels potlid book.

Mr Colemane and Sons began manufacture of their quickly-famous Eucalypte Oil in September 1885.   'Besides being a good cure, it is also a preventive of disease' they advertised.
The factory was located on the 'eucalyptus reserve' Gundagai Road.
In November 1895 the 'Colemane & Sons Eucalyptus Stakes', a road race to Gavan's Hotel at Coolac and return, drew a number of entries.  Prizemoney was 10 pounds.

1896 saw the business shift to Jeremiah 'situated on the Ajinbilly Creek'.   The bottling alone was done at Brawlin'.

A.W. Colemane 'manufacturer of Eucalyptus Oil, essences, disinfectancts and associated products' returns to Cucumbla Creek  in early May 1904.

The Colemane offices were located at 251 Parker St as of 1906.

Alfred William Colemane died at Newtown aged 75 in May 1912.   He came to Cootamundra in the 1870's.   His products were sold in Australia and overseas, and his 'name emblazoned on every country fence'.
