Course Description
. This course is a combination of the objectives mandated by the State of Georgia and the Floyd County Board of Education for Economics and Civics. The first 9 weeks of instruction will deal primarily with Economics. The Economics textbook will be issued and used during this time frame. The second 9 weeks will deal primarily with Civics and the Civics text will be issued and used. Several activities will be required which will include a series of Social Studies skills objectives that will benefit the student in the study of both of the above mentioned subjects as well as to increase their Social Studies utility. Course Goal or Objective. To make the student knowledgeable and proficient in the skills needed to become a viable part of the Economic process and to inform and instill the values and knowledge needed to be good citizens in the United States both as active participants and as consumers of government services. As a result of the above objective the student should be proficient in the related objectives on the Georgia High School Graduation Test.
Lab Requirement. This class will involve a consistent utilization of the Social Studies Lab. The student will receive a lab grade at the conclusion of each lab exercise.
Class work. Students will be required to complete in-class assignments.
Homework. Students will be required to complete a reasonable amount of work outside the classroom and scheduled class time. The student will compile this work in a binder type notebook. Periodic notebook checks will be performed. Homework is due on the day declared by the teacher and can be checked at anytime.
Internet Assignments. This class will involve internet assignments. Students not having access to the internet will be given an opportunity to do an alternate assignment. The instructor will attempt to provide internet access at school for the above-mentioned students when feasible.
Special Projects. Each student must complete 1 research paper and 1 project during the semester. (Project descriptions will be provided)
Tests. Students will be tested at the conclusion of each instructional unit. Smaller, related units may be combined for testing purposes. A mid-term test at the conclusion of the first 9-weeks will be given. A comprehensive Final Exam will be given at the conclusion of the semester.
Class Participation. Students will receive a class participation grade provided they do not exceed five absences. One point will be deducted for each absence up to five. This grade can be used to replace the lowest test grade.
9 Weeks Grading Procedure: Each assignment mentioned above will be graded. The student will be informed of the total points possible for each assignment before the assignment is made. Tests will be assigned more points possible than homework. At the conclusion of the 9 weeks grading period the student's points earned will be divided by the points possible to achieve a numerical average.
Semester Grading Procedure: The Final Exam will account for 20% of the Semester Grade. The 9 Weeks grades each will represent 40% of the Semester Grade.
Attendance Policy: The Floyd County Board of Education's attendance policy as provided in the student handbook will be strictly enforced.
A. Students needing to make-up work that has been missed due to absence must notify the teacher within 3 days after returning to school as stated in the Floyd County Board of Education policy.
Assistance: Students having any difficulty with this class should see the teacher for assistance.
Behavior... The Coosa High School classroom management plan will be the guide for discipline problems.
Students will be treated as young adults and be expected to act accordingly. Courtesy is Contagious
