| Observation: The Fireplace Gypsies by coondogk9 We sat and watched the embers do their flight as they crackled and popped, shooting their lives in tiny arcs to die in a trail of black curly smoke. The coals red and ravid pink smoldering and glowing on their hot bed of iron. The ash building a nest under their feet as they fed on one another. The walls of stone reflected their bright glowing eyes out to dimly burn the shadows away. Shimmering heat waves like ripples on a pond rose and danced their steps across the air. A small flame occasionally rose from the gathering to look around and disappear again back in to its bed of brothers. Yellow, red, pink and blue pockets shone in the dark black of the night. Radiant waves shimmered and waltzed like gypsies in gaily-colored skirts across the stone floor. Kindling curled like serpents, twisting and turning over until their lifeless bodies lay cooling on the ground. We sat on cushioned sidelines watching the show, a large blanket shielding our open robed bodies from the cabins cold night air. Our warm bodies close as we locked fingers in each others hands. We felt like one person sharing two of the same dreams as we sat in the night. I had my arm around her as she snuggled up under my arm, drawing absent-minded circles with her nail on my ribs. Then I would feel her soft warm palm slide along my stomach to my chest and over my breast. Her cheek against my chest as she lazily watched the imitation fireflies putting on their show. The radiant beauty on her face as the light danced over her, silhouetting shadows from her hair across my skin. The peaceful look of grace flowed like a sinless child, secure and protected as she crept closer. I could feel the silky tendrils of her hair as it brushed my skin, bringing a joy to my heart. Our nestled covered huddle comforted like a kitten in its mothers curl. I sensed her move as she twisted around to back into my waiting arms. Her arms folded on mine I'd wrapped her in, my head above her. My raised knees captured hers as we sat molded to each other. Her warm body bringing comfort to my soul as we held each other near. We watched the light show as it dazzled and danced the night into mini displays of glowing shadows. The darkness crept back only to be driven away once again by the tracers racing across the hearth. The ricocheting fireballs exploded in mid flight an fell dizzily spiraling downward. A hiss as the resin burned and spewed its crystalline ashes into the waiting inferno. Well received then spit on to pop until its gasping body spent its breath scattered among the other lost souls of the flame. Reflecting like a search light on the glimmering sea the swirling blue and reddish bodied choreographers tipped their yellow heads to the crowd. The night wore on as another log was placed to feed the hungry gaily dressed group. Gnawing ravenously at the fresh meal they renewed their famished ritual. Leaping high and bright, wavering sending long colorescent marks along the cabin wall. The soft porous bark soon diminished, lowering the curtain to a slow waltz. Holding each other closer and quieter now the steps more exacting, they slowly spun around the hot dance floor until they melted into a flow. Then sitting calmly they met each others gaze with bright red pupils dilating, growing cooler. The banquet log now cracked and knurled lay calm and restful on the iron bed. Little tendrils of smoke curled upward every now and then to soot the walls of the dance floor. Our couple unmoving, slept the sweet slumber of dreams as the fire died to a warm coal bed of its own. Nestled in dreams of the night the couple embraced the warmth and their memories with content on their faces. The masked writer <o.-> <-.-> |
