One Day at a Time

She pined for her lover, a young man of twenty three.
For weeks shed been without him, a nervous wreck shed be.
She was on vacation, her husband was along.
A sort of honeymoon, but she didnt wish him gone.

She had loved the both of them, but one she met too late.
Long after she was married, they then began to date.
She loved his charm and willing ways, not unlike herself.
For years now theyd been together, but on an upper shelf.

Sometimes she couldnt reach him, then bitterness and pain.
She just wished to touch him, and hold him once again.
All these years she couldnt let go, he so loved her dearly.
All this time they never got caught, but a few times nearly.

The words he whispered in her ear, darling Ill always love you.
Words she still can hear today, words that they made love to.
The last few weeks she looked round corners, hoping he was there.
But she knew deep in her heart, hed never fight unfair.

Shed never been away this long, never been without him.
Yes thered been days and even weeks, but still close to her whims.
Its not she didnt love her spouse, that she really did.
He treated her with kindness, in and out of bed.

This life at first was torment, full of guilt and shame.
But her lover told her no, he was part to blame.
He didnt want to steal her away, but only wait for her.
For someday in his heart he hoped, they would be together.

He was also filled with pain, the wrong that he had done.
He had tried to let her go, but the love he had, had won.
Day after day his mind was stirred, emotions he had wrought.
Over time he gave up, no answers for what he sought.

He didnt want to wreck her life, destroy a family.
All he wished was that someday, together they would be.
They knew not how, or even when, but planned it anyway.
Until that time when it might be, shed just go day by day.

The story doesnt end here, maybe it never will.
Forty maybe fifty years, is a long time to kill.
If it doesnt happen, hell wait for her up there.
Ill just hang around till then, Ill not go anywhere.
