        Little Things

Older now but recollect,
Thoughts of days gone by.
Walking along a ditch bank,
A fish lay on its side.

As I watched a muskrat came,
And pulled him to the reeds.
I moved around to watch him,
And on the fish he feeds.

Further down an Egrets wings,
Slow motion soared away.
The same with a Sandhill Crane,
And the smell of newmown hay.

Far off in the distance,
A mesa stood alone.
Id been there once before,
It took me all day long.

My little legs, tired and weary,
Made the trek back home.
Through mesquite and yucca plant,
And out there all alone.

To this day I wish my kids,
Had that opportunity.
The simple things we had back then,
And curiosity.

An adobe house, an outdoor stuff,
AC we didnt need.
In the morning pick up your clothes,
And shake out centipedes.

Dirt floor in the kitchen,
Hard swept and packed with sand.
Coal oil lamps and butter churns,
The kind that got your hands.

Those were the days I remember most.
Full of fun and work to do.
Not the malls or burger king,
What coins we had were few.

A million Jillion memories,
Packed in this old head.
Then one day theyll all be lost,
Except for what youve read.
