                            Elk Meadow

Walking among the grasses I saw Elk standing watch.
Antlers straddled shoulders voice loud and clear.
One bugles his mating call, his head back and sang.
The Elk the most majestic in the family of the deer.

The meadow king searching, looking for a mate.
Large and statuesque yet graceful in his stride.
Standing still, head turned, he watched me intently.
Profiled against the trees showing me his pride.

Squirrels ran along the limbs chattering in might.
They the clowns of the forest like busy little bees.
A raven overlooks their laughter stern on his perch.
The blue jay added his as it echoed through the trees.

A cardinal cocked his head, dressed in a red tuxedo.
Colors added to the forest rainbow as others entered in.
A hummingbird now filled the spectrum of ruby, blue, and green
Wings burned the mountain air their beaks long and thin.

When I first entered the meadow the Elk was all I saw.
Then after observation I found more than forest creatures.
The flowers held butterflies and insects all in color.
Now I can take this picture home and rediscover all its features.
