For a time I just sat and watched, as furry creatures scampered about. And the brightly colored birds, as they darted in and out. When a snap I heard behind me, I turned to see the cause. All I could see was huge form, with outstretched arms and claws. I backed away as slow as I could, the fear was deep inside. I shook, trembled, and quivered, I knew I was gonna die. His tremendous jaws full open, long fangs showed he was proud. He rolled his head all about, and roared and bellowed to the clouds. The distance between us lengthened, then he lowered to the ground. Ambled off towards the shallows, like I wasn't around. Still froze in place for fear of him, I watched him for a bit. Then he turned and looked at me, I heard my self say, "OHHH .........T" He then just as quickly, waded out beyond, and in a flash, one mighty swipe, knocked a fish from the pond. I watched the fish flip and fighting, trying to get off the bank. Soon he tired and lay quite still, others joined him all in rank. I'd forgotten just how scared I was, as I watched him fishing there. I had lived to tell about this, my run in with a bear. He was just a bit concerned, I'd taken his fishing place. But he always had the upper hand, and he could see that in my face. I didn't hang around too long, I backed along the trail. And when I heard the engine roar, I thought I'd found the Holy Grail. I left what little camping gear, and left without a word. I don't regret a thing I lost, just glad of that SNAP I heard. I may return again someday, I hav'nt made up my mind. But the next time I see him, I hope it's not from behind. The Masked Writer <O.O> wheewh (C) 2001 T Lovett |
By The Waters Edge Part II I yawned and stretched my drowsy self, And walked down to the pool. I splashed the water on my face, It wasnt freezing but it was cool. I stood with hands cupped to my hips, The morning air was crisp. Across the way a doe and fawn, Watching me, then lean and take a sip. Others waking the same as I, The chatter of the squirrels. Their flagged tails held high, The ends were fully curled. The blue jays normal shrills and screams, As they went about their way. Red birds, wax wings, and orioles, Awoke to greet the day. Other birds and mammals, And creatures stirred around. An otter made its wake and trail, In its water playground. I cast a line to gather food, A hungry fish Id hoped. And not long after, with my catch, I climbed back up the slope. With my belly full and camp was clean, My trek I did begin. The first place was the waterfall, Where Id seen a cave within. Shielding my head with slicker on, I walked the narrow trail. With fingers gripping slippery cracks, I once nearly fell. Soon I found myself inside, With the musty, stagnant smell. The damp, dark, lurking shadows, couldn't draw me to their spell. As I withdrew I did look back, A marvel it really was. But I was not the spelunker, especially under the falls. I cupped my hands for a drink, of the water crystal clear. I wondered why the humans I knew, Needed soda, spirits and beer. ------------------------------------- I watched it bubble, seep, and drip, the drip drip drip As I drew it to my mouth to sip |
