We require adult chaperones (one for every ten students), who are admitted free.  Groups must provide their own transportation, and day programs must provide their own lunch.

Can You Dig It? Introduction to Coon Creek

  • Grades 3 - Adult

Students are involved in and introductory discussion about the abundant fossils at the site as they collect and prepare their own specimens to take home. See if you can spot a fish scale or tooth among the abundant fossilized shell material.

  • Fee: $6.50 per student

Creek Walk

  • Grades 3 - Adult

This is for groups who have completed the "Introduction to Coon Creek" and want to come back for more! Surface collect for fossils in the creek bed itself. Commonly found fossils include internal molds of mollusks, animal burrows, and body parts of crabs and shrimp. Learn more about he geology of the 70 million year old Coon Creek formation and see where the mosasaurs were discovered.

Field Paleontology

  • Grades 5 - Adult

Experience an in-depth study of the Cretaceous fossil deposits at Coon Creek as you learn about the ancient ocean environments of West Tennessee.  Participants collect and interpret fossils from the fossil "mound" and the creek bed, learn how to clean and preserve the fossils, and make a sample collection to take home.

Nature Detectives

  • Grades 1 - Adult

See the other natural wonders Coon Creek has to offer. Search out clues to discover the modern animals and abundant plant life found along our nature trail.  Critters may be hiding, but you'll learn to see evidence that proves they are there.  At first glance, the trees all look alike, but you'll learn how to decipher their differences.  Open your eyes to the hidden world on your own back yard.
