Congratulations to NASCAR for it's 50th great year!!!.
Ernie Irvin was hit from behind (ever so slightly) by Sterling Marlin causing the "BIG ONE" at Talladega. He went up the steep bank between turns one and two and came straight down and Dick Trickle (#90) hit him hard.
At that point Kevin LePage bumped teammate Mark Martin from behind sending him sideways and into the driver side of friend Ernie. This probably cost Mark ANY shot at the championship as he ended up behind the wall for significant repairs. By the time he returned he was over 20 laps down.

Most important was Irvin's condition. Here he is being put on a stretcher. He was conscious and alert and was able to identify where he was.
The winner ended up being Dale Jarrett, who also won the "NO BULL 5" bonus of $1,000,000. Second was the #24 car, after being nearly a lap down when the big one hit (he was in the pits when a caution was put out, caught in the pits meant he restarted the race just in front of the leaders), he was able to come all the way around for the ensuing start.

Under the lights in Daytona!! The place was absolutely fabulous. Here's the start of the race with Bobby Labonte and Jeff Burton bringing the field to the green flag.
Dale Earnhardt had a great night until his pit stop around lap 100. At that time he ran into a tire in Bobby Labonte's pit stall. Hurting the car's front spoiler it took the Goodwrench crew numerous stops throughout the evening to get the car into contention.
Here's Jeff and the rainbow warriors in the pits. The crew had a real good night in the pits for Jeff.
The "big one" came on lap 32 when rookie Kevin Lepage lost it in turn 2 taking out Michael Waltrip and a host of others. The car burst into flames and it is believed that Kevin cracked his shoulder blade falling out of the car.

Here's the final restart. Jeff Gordon was leading with 6 laps remaining when a typical Florida shower caused a 37 red flag delay. Man, what a sight this place was!!!
After some furious action behind him Jeff won the 3 lap shootout!!! Here he is crossing the line for victory 11 of the year and most importantly an OCTOBER win.

Let the celebrating begin. Jeff needs to gain 12 points on Mark Martin for the cup this year!!!

Jeff Gordon celebrates his third Winston Cup championship after winning the race at Rockingham.

Here he is doing his victory lap after winning the race.

Here's the Gordon "family" as they celebrate the championship.

After numerous hours of delay for rain at Atlanta Jeff walks away from the cars for an extension of the delay.

For the first time the race was finished under the lights in Atlanta to the dismay of many of the fans. Pit road was soaked and cautions were held under caution. Jeff took the lead from Dale Jarrett and never looked back after NASCAR announced a 25 lap shootout to end the race well short of the advertised distance. Jeff won and celebrated his record tying 13th victory in 1998. CONGRATULATIONS JEFF!!!!! ON TO 1999 and the DAYTONA 500.
