Match Report 2/6/02
Under 12
Cooma took on North Canberra Bears on our home turf.
The game started well for Cooma with the home side denying the Bears of possession for the first ten minutes of the match.
Cooma were the first to score. Strong forward running from Nicholas Moon and Matthew Shaw set Cooma in good field position. A slick backline movement saw the ball go from Sam Williams to Lachlan Schofield then to Jonathon Clarke who beat 3 would be tacklers to score his 7th try of the season.
Straight from the kick off Cooma were again on the attack with Luke Taylor, Clinton Riley and Daniel Ardle setting up play for Clarke to score again. With the conversion by Mitchell Phillips Cooma took a commanding 15 nil lead into half time.
The Bears started the second half with a glut of possession. Cooma were called on for long periods of defence. Strong tackling from Sam Alcock, Andrew Boller and pocket dynamo Ricky Brazulaitis held the opposition out. Some simple mistakes saw Cooma turn the ball over too many times resulting in 2 tries for the Bears.
This then set the game up for a thrilling finish with Cooma hanging on to 15-8 lead.
Cooma nearly scored with a thrilling run from Mitchell Phillips seeing him put a toe into touch just before the corner post.
Then came the play of the day with bookend Nathan Whiteman steaming on to the ball on the half way mark and nothing was going to stop him scoring. The crowd rose to their feet as Nathan carried defenders on his back to score adjacent to the posts. This broke the Bears comeback and saw Cooma run out deserved winners by 18 points to 8.

Cooma were called on to make a lot of tackles in the second half and congratulations to the boys for a committed effort.
Team Player Award went to Nathan Whiteman, 3 points to Sam Williams (30 tackles), 2 to Nicholas Moon and 1 to Jonathon Clarke.

The Under 12s resumed their season on Sunday with a trip to Kippax to take on the West Belconnen Warriors. They had a hard tussle with them earlier in the year so they were expecting another tight game.
The boys got a nice surprise as the game was to be played on West Belconnon`s main ground. The surroundings must have inspired the boys as they played above themselves with plenty of enthusiasm and commitment to lead by 10 - nil at the half time break. This was impressive as they also had two tries disallowed. The big guys Mitchell Simpson, Mathew Shaw and Nathan WILLIE Whiteman were making plenty off meters up the middle The word is WILLIE will be playing with plat's for next weeks game and with Ricky Brazulitas, Nicholas Moon and Andrew Boller defending the house down. This left Sam Williams and Locky Schofield to lead the backs around the park opening the Warriors up to run away with the game 27-nil. Luke Taylor continued his good year with 60 meter run to score under the posts. Jono Clarke was impressive also scoring a good individual try. Everyone has probably already heard about Moonies intercept try but it also was a good bit of individual play. Sam Alcock, Daniel Ardle Mitchell Phillips and Dale Hennessey all played faultless games to give the team a very impressive win.
Best and Fairest points this week went 3 Sam Williams
           2 Luke Taylor
1 Mitchell Simpson and Andrew Boller
Team Player also went to Mitchell Simpson.

Cooma travelled to Kaleen on Sunday ready for a hard battle against the North Canberra Bears.
Captained by Jonathon Clarke, Cooma won the toss and were on the attack immediately. Coomas pattern of 3 forwards hit up plays and then swift service to the backs saw Cooma take a 10 nil lead after tries to Jonathon Clarke and a barnstorming run by Nathan Willie Whiteman. A conversion from wide out by Luke Taylor had the team confident to score more tries.
North Canberra then hit back with a try and conversion to then trail by only 3 points.
Playing with only 12 men Cooma had to dig deep and a try to Nicholas Moon and a 50 meter effort by Captain Clarke saw Cooma take a hard earned 18-7 lead into half time.
The boys braced themselves for a tough second half and were not disappointed as the Bears came out firing to score 2 tries and take a 19-18 lead with time running out. Injuries saw Cooma reduced to 11 men for the majority of the second half.
With the Bears having an automatic 2 man overlap, resolute defence from all the boys frustrated the Bears into some welcome errors.
Coomas old heads Sam Williams, Locky Schofield and Andrew Boller played some solid footy gaining Cooma good field position to attempt to reclaim the lead.
Strong runs from Whiteman, Taylor and Sam Alcock set play up for Mitchell Simpson to burst onto the ball to score what was to be the winning try.
Strong defence from Clinton Riley, Ricky Brazulaitis and a memorable tackle from Clarke, who was everywhere, saw Cooma hold onto a thrilling 21-19 lead.
The boys deserve a bid WELL DONE on a great all round team effort.
Thanks to the parents and supporters who follow our team all round Canberra. The coaching staff and the players really appreciate your efforts. We look forward to our next game at home on Sunday.
Team Player this week went to Matthew Shaw, Man of Match to Jonathon Clarke, 2 points to Mitchell Simpson, and 1 point to Clinton Riley and Sam Alcock.
Please be at training by 4.00pm ready to go on Thursday dressed in jerseys and trackys or footy shorts. Everyone needs to look good for the TV and special guest coach.
