First off, most pop is uncool. That includes all the boybands, who sound like each other and have no originality, it includes all the blonde - breast implanted 16-20 year old singgerss who can't sing and all sound like each other and lack originality, and all the basic songs about love, relationships, break ups, cheating, etc. Love is becoming old and used. Sing something we haven't heard!
Latin pop is new and cool- it is something that has not been done before, it is new! Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and Shakira are all interesting pop sensations.
Alternative rock, punk rock, and heavy rock are all cool. Bands like Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Creed, U2, Rage against the Machine, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Third Eye Blind are all cool. They show originalitly in their songs- for one thing, they actually write their own songs and have something to sing about besides the love lives that don't exist. Blink 182 , SR- 71, Foo Fighters , Eve 6 are all cool punk bands- they show a sound that is not over used, yet... and they don't sing about happy happy love stuff, which all pop contains, they sing about life and other stuff.
Rap is cool- when its rap that's not pop- what i mean is the rap that is about happy happy life stuff- for instance Will Smith, and especially Puff Daddy- they are so happy- they have become Pop. Rap that is cool is gangster rap, and rappers that have a message to life, some attitude and something unexplainable that is the energy behind rap. Rappers like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Jay -Z, rappers that keep their elements and are not influenced by popularity and rap to become famous, but rap for themselves and about their attitudes toward life.
R&B is cool , although it is mainly about love too, but the key to R& B is that they have talent, they have a voice, they keep their songs real, and lack the synthesizers and technology that pop contains- they actually have talent and are the singers that sing about love because it is something they experience, not something some songwriters wrote for them. They depend on their own selves, instead of the world of technology. Boyz II Men, Lucy Pearl, Destiny's Child, TLC are all cool R& B artists, for one thing- they actually are artists.
Basically, uniqueness and talent with originalitly makes " cool", once the pop industry stops copying each other and sounding the same just because they saw someone who made a sucess with something and copy it-maybe one day they will be free from " un cool ness" Nothing repeated and copied can be cool.
Limp bizkit is one of the cool main stream rock bands that are original and recognized by the public audience.
Lucy Pearl , one of the cooler and
popular r&b groups that still contain the original R&B sound unlike Mariah Carey ( Below) who have turned her music into screeching pop , and lost her talent in the process.
