Before rushing out and buying any old palm that looks nice, think about whether or not it is in practice, a sensible thing to do. Below are a few factors that should be taken into consideration before and after purchasing: 1, Are you prepared to give it any winter attention? if not d'ont choose a half-hardy palm as the chances are that it will perish within the first year of planting. Examples include P Canariensis, Washingtonia Robusta (and filifera) or Butia Capitata. In this case the only palms that you can get away with planting are the Trachycarpus Fortunei (Chamaerops Excelsa) or Chamaerops Humils. 2,Another thing that you should consider is "do you really have the room for the palm?" if you have a tiny backyard and choose to buy a Phoenix C for example you are going to find yourself in difficulties in a couple of years time when the palm begins to develop or mature. For example, an Aunt that lives in South West France bought a fairly small Phoenic C about five years ago. They own a small seaside house with a garden barely bigger than a patchwork quilt, their phoenix has since (within the last 3 years) accelerated its rate of growth enourmously and has began to become a nuisance rather than a thing of beauty. 3, Once you have chosen the palm the next thing to consider is "where is the best place to plant my palm in the garden". If you are planning to leave the palm out of doors throughout the winter months choose an area that is preferably south facing. This will give the palm more heat than if it is planted in the shade. You should also choose an area that is well drained |
