Born in Cambridge, England, the son
of a university college principal,
Richard Attenborough left his home at age
17 to attend the Royal Academy of
Dramamtic Arts in London. He soon earned
his first West End theater role, then
rocketed to national stardom on the play
Brighton Rock.

Attenborough screen-debuted in 1942
and later became a producer and director.
He produced and directed the epic film
Gandhi, winner of five British Academy
Awards and eight American Oscars�, with
Attenborough winning Best Film and Best
Director Awards on both sides of the
Atlantic. He was knighted in 1976.
