Your First Song

Alright! If your all tuned up and ready to go, lets begin.

Tune to Standard E tuning.

The song you will learn first is Enter Sandman. Its a good song for a beginner. The song begins with some picked notes, then shifts into powerchords. Lets take a look.

Amp Channel Clean

D------5--------
A----7---------7    repeat
E--0------6-5--

Amp Channel Distorted

A--------------2///7
E--0-0-0-0-0-0-          repeat

The 2///7 indicates for you to slide your finger up to fret 7. Later on I will reduce this to one slash.

Amp Channel Distorted

A---2---7------------3
E---0-----5--0-0-0--1    repeat

Amp Channel Distorted

A--2-2///7------                                A--5--2--4--2--4--5--4--2
E--0-0-----6-5~  repeat 3 times then  E--3--0--2--0--2--3--2--0

The tilde ~ represents a spot where you let the string ring for a second or two, or however long it is in the song.

Verse Distorted

G------------------                    G-------2------
D------------------                    D----4--------4
A--2--------------3                   A---------3-2--
E--0-x-x-x-x-x--1  repeat then  E--2-----------

Chrous Distorted

D-----5--4                                D----5-- 4--2
A--4--3--2                               A--4--3--2--2
E--2------  repeat 3 times then   E--2---------0

The x's mean for you to use palm muting on the open E string to get that chunky metal sound.  You should lightly palm mute the part right before the chorus so the strings don't hum or ring while picking them.

Now put those in order and play along to the song. Congratulations, you've learned your first song. It was also my first song. It employs some of the basics of rock music, and is the most played song in instrument shops around the world.
