The Re-emergence Of Rubik's Cube
![]() |
COOLGAMESWORLD
Erno Rubik's creation has been around for a while. Thirty years after its inception, Rubik's Cube has imprinted itself into world pop culture
Rubik began devising plans for The Cube as an attempt to understand The Cubes peculiar structural design. He questioned as to how each block would behave independently during rotations. First with metal pins, then with elastics, Rubik endeavored for the entire structure to remain a cube during various rotations. Having failed using both methods, Rubik hand carved, then assembled the smaller units together, marking each face with coloured paper. Immediately, Rubik was captivated by the change in colour as produced by each turn.
As a puzzle, Rubik's Cube was developed in 1974 when Rubik realized that to the untrained individual, solving The Cube would take time not measured in hours or days but by assloads. Within a month, Rubik was able to formulate a solution, one heavily reliant upon the alignment of all eight corner cubes. In January 1975, Rubik applied for a national patent and assigned his invention the formerly named "Magic Cube" to a Hungarian company for future manufacturing.

By 1977, a patent approval returned and the "Magic Cube" was mass produced for sale in Budapest. By 1979, Rubik signed on with Ideal Toys, effectively bringing the "Magic Cube" to Western toy fairs and exhibitions. Following its debut, Ideal Toys remanufactured and repackaged the "Magic Cube" in accordance to Western safety regulations. With a newly designed cube, Ideal Toys set off to rename the poorly dubbed "Magic Cube." Having considered other obscure designations such as "The Gordian Knot" and "Inca Gold," the company settled on "Rubik's Cube." Because of an initial scarcity of Cubes in North America many substandard imitations surfaced. By the end of 1983, Rubik's Cube completely trumped suspiciously similar conceptions such as Roxy's Spherical 3X3X3 and Nichols 2X2X2.
Appealing to hundreds of millions, Rubik's Cube won the BATR Toy Of The Year Award in both 1980 and 1981. At the height of The Cube's popularity, sheets of individually coloured sheets were manufactured to alleviate the impatience of aggravated consumers who were unable to solve their cubes. But how did Rubik's Cube achieve such a level of notoriety?

Even decades after its primary inception, speed cubists have widely engaged in competitions to reconfigure The Cube in the fastest time possible. Rubik's Cube has so effectively and so successfully slipped back as a prominent figure in pop culture that those who capitilize on their proficiency are capable to generate further recognition by placing themselves in the most asinine of situations. From solving The Cube underwater to solving with both feet on a hand operated bicycle, Rubik's Cube as an icon has become synonymous with Cool.
