Verdict
God Of War II still features the mindless fun of hacking and slashing with four times as many boss fights. There are the mind-boggling puzzles, the disproportionately large weapons, and other god-offing abilities. It's pretty much more of the same, but the same is just damn good.
Kratos, is the new God Of War.
He is more ruthless and painfully more vindictive then his predecessor. However, as a relatively new deity, Kratos soon realizes that his newly acquired immortality does not render him impervious to being messed by the gods. As the storyline progresses, Kratos is dispatched by enemies, ends up in Hades' domain and spends significant chunks of time just being the elusive crap out of mortals and gods to get the truth.  In his travels, Kratos encounters different baddies, some devious and some utterly clownish.  But among them, is the notorious Barbarian King, the same which came wee close to to sending Kratos to the next world in the first title.
God Of War II does boast improved graphics, but gameplay remains remarkably similar. Just like in the first game, Kratos' wave of devastating attacks are controlled by the players sequence of button smashes. Once Kratos has significantly weakened an enemy, an indicator appears above them. When this occurs, players are required to punch in a small series of controls within a short amount of time. If successful, Kratos will then unleash strangely satisfying kill moves, ones which usually involve aerial decapitations, stylish vivisections and other morbidly fulfilling actions. However, failure to do so will result in damage upon Kratos - but only a little. So try and try...
One of the new features of GOW 2
is Rage Of The Titans. Although it boasts many of the same advantages of Rage Of The Gods, one of the essentials is that it can be deactivated even after activation, which begs the question why wasn't this integrated in God Of War? Eventually, Kratos gains other abilities, like Typhon's Bane, Cronus' Rage, Head Of Euryale and Atlas Quake, an attack, which delivers an assload of ground tremors upon any unlucky bastard. Furthermore, after completion of the game, Kratos has access to an array of armour. Armour changes Kratos' appearance but also alters the effect of magic orbs in various ways.
Fans of GOW will be glad to know that the kill moves are equally gruesome.
