Wii Exercise

Nintendo is a show off. Not only did they widely boast their success at E3, they’ve sold an assload of Wiis for the past 33 weeks and have a lead in sales of 4-to-1 against the Playstation 3. With 33% of Nintendo console owners being women, Nintendo game producer Miyamto unveiled his latest development, an exercise game with its own unique interface. Wii Fit features various exercises, emphasizing balance, dexterity, endurance and good ol’ body building. All this is done on the Wii Balance, a pad that responds to shifts in weight as well as movement. Miyamto estimates that the Wii Fit will arrive in early 2008.

This is not the first time that the gaming industry has ventured in exercising territory. I seem to remember a quickly dismissed venture by Sony. Ah yes! EyeToy Kinetic. It was an interesting concept; Kinetic incorporated martial arts, Yoga and Pilates into different exercise sessions all of which was carried out but by the player’s movement – just like Fit. Kinetic was released into the market but was later brushed off. Weird. From past responses, Wii Fit may suffer the same fate. However, seeing as Nintendo Wii is extremely popular with the gaming crowd, it may manage to pull of Wii Fit.
