all the boys grew up in a single parent environment- divorced, average families, trying to provide a future for their sons.
jerry's father passed away when he was still at primary school, and and working part time was a lifestyle for him from that time on. he started working while he was still in grade two, packaging toys with this sister and in his teenage years, worked different jobs (including some unerwear modelling) on and off to support his sick mother.

in the show, an experience playboy, but outside, a young man who grew up almost solitarily in the big city of singapore, the 'meteor garden' star ken also never got to experience a normal family life. coming from a divorced family, from the age of seven he started his life in singapore- and continued to live there until the age of 17. he was quoted as saying ''there was a stage when i didn't even know where tomorrows foods' money was coming from'.
ken grew up in a large foster home, around 20 something kids. being the only taiwanese there and always naughty, he was often beat up by the other boys. at age seventeen, he finally returned to his home- taiwan.
