The DNA unzips. The bottom of the left side is 3`, the top 5`. For the right side, the bottom is 5`, the top is 3`. DNA can only be made from 5` to 3`. The DNA polymerase works its way up the right side, from 5` to 3`, while another waits. When it unzips enough, another DNA polymerase works down the left side, from 5` to 3`. This continues until the DNA strand is completed.
