Cells for 200:

List ten organelles and what they do. Scroll down to see answer.

Nucleus: the brain of the cell, contains stringy and tangled DNA
Nucleolus: makes ribosomes
Cell/Plasma Membrane: Selectively permeable, only lets certain things through.
Cell wall: Only on plants, made of cellulose (and lignin in wood), held together by pectin.
Cytoplasm: contains microtubles (little protein tubes) and microfilaments (little protein fibers), forms cytoskeleton.
Mitochondria: Makes energy (ATPs)
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): Smooth (no ribosomes) and Rough (ribosomes attached).
Ribosome: makes proteins, can be attached to ER or floating in the cytoplasm.
Vacuole: stores waste, food, and/or water. Larger in Plants.
Golgi body: sends food and water in vesicles.
Lysosomes: stores digestive enzymes.
Centrioles: helps cells divide (mitosis, only in animals)
Chloroplast: Where photosynthesis occurs
Plastid: two kinds: Leukoplasts for storage, Chromoplast for pigment (color)
Cilia or flagella: many little hairs or long tail, respectively. Used for movement.
