On May 26, 10 teachers at Catholic schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh received the 2009 Golden Apple Award, symbolic of excellent performance in the classroom, church and community. These recipients received a $5,000 grant as part of the award. We would like to congratulate our parishioner, Toni Wojtkowski, for achieving this honor. Toni has taught a variety of subjects over her 24 years at St. James School in Sewickley. As St. James' principal wrote, "She has impressed me throughout the years I have known her. If there is one word to describe Toni, it is fair. She treats every student that she works with the same. She remains positive with all the challenges that teaching middle school brings." Toni is an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion at St. James and Our Lady of Peace. She sponsors fund-raising for a mission in Mexico, and she also sponsors a child in Appalachia. She is a graduate of Edinboro University with a bachelor's degree in education. She is a certified catechist of the diocese, and is listed in Who's Who Among American Teachers. Toni is a member of the Christian Mother's Association, volunteers at a local hospice and is a member of the Conway Civic Women's Club. Congratulations, Toni!
In April 2009, the Conway Civic Women's Club awarded a $350.00 scholarship to Freedom Area High School Senior Julie Burns. Julie is the daughter of Tom and Maureen Burns, and plans to attend Penn State Beaver, majoring in secondary math education. Congratulations, Julie.
