Email From a Former Camp Director:
Hi David,
Yes, I directed Camp Council from 1971-1973, and then once again in 1975.They asked me to return as director in the very early '80's, but my position on the faculty of La Salle University did not permit me the time to devote to doing the job properly. I was the first male director of what was then an all-female camp. I was also the first non-Jewish director of what was then a camp run under the auspices of the JYC. SGF was our brother camp. A man named John Schmanek was the caretaker, and lived at the camp year-round.
I have lots of fond memories of CC, and I still see some of the staff that worked with me at that time. I have even met some women who were campers during my time as "Uncle Pres." I still have pictures and slides of many of our activities, such as Carnival Day and Camp Plays. We called the two sections of camp "The Valley" (younger campers) and "The Hill" (older campers). We ran three encampments each summer, with about 140 - 160 campers per three week encampment. I had about 40 staff members. Older campers served as Waitresses in the dining hall. Some of the old timers who founded the camp used to visit regularly (Leon Stein, Dotsie Rothschild, Janice Stein, Nancy Wallerstein, and others). The Board of Directors was comprised of many wealthy businessmen in Elkins Park and Philadelphia.
Good luck researching the camp's history. Many people dedicated lots of hard work to developing the camp, and donated a lot of money to fund its activities. Uncle Leon (long since passed away) used to tell stories about hand planting many of the trees near the director's cabin and the office. I thought it was a shame to see the property go to developers, and even wondered if I should put a group together to buy the land and start another camp. Alas, I never did follow through.
Thanks for the note. Best wishes.
