| Dear Senator Curtis, While you have been in office you have been an outstanding leader and. We appreciate that you are trying to make changes for the future and for our children. As an advocate for better school programs and continuing education, you have demostrated that you do care for the community. Thank you. Because you have gained our trust, we are confident that you will be able to help us in this matter. We are writting to you today to try and make a difference in the current liquor laws. We are the Convivial Neighbors, a group that is dedicated to reforming Utah's Liquor laws. With the support of our neighbors, we are asking that you try and understand our views and consider helping us to make the changes that we want to see. Our goal is to fight for our rights to drink more freely, but responsibly. Our group believes in a strong structured state that does not hinder the preference in alternate lifestyles. Senator Curtis, it is time for Utah to progress. It is time for a change. We support most of Utah's liquor laws and agree that these laws are benificial to all members of the community. Please keep in mind that our goal is to create a reasonable change in a few specific laws. We feel that this change may increase the pleasure of living in Utah. To many people liquor is a part of everyday living and current liquor laws prevent these people from living their lifestyles to the fullest extent of happiness. The following are the laws which we are asking for your help in reforming: We would like an amendment to the law that prohibits the importation of wine, liquor, beer for private use. There are many wine collectors who find themselves limited to the wines they are able to add to their collections. In addition, we feel that the hours of operation of the state run liquor stores need to be extended. Also, we ask that you abolish the law that prohibits Utahans from purchasing wine, liquor, and heavy beer on Sundays. Many people feel that we should not be restricted to purchase wine, liquor, and heavy beer on Sunday and the limited hours are unfair. Finally, decrease the taxes paid to bring taxes into the state. Local businesses that sell wine, liquor, and heavy beer have to pay the same high taxes as everyone else and are still expected to make a profit. This makes them have to raise their already steep prices creating a lower profit margin and hurting business. For consumers it is impractical to enjoy drinking on the town because it takes way too much out of our wallets. By cutting the extremely high taxes on the importaion of alcohol, it would allow an increased selection of wine, liquor, and heavy beer, attract more outside tourism, and create cheaper prices. We deserve to have the same privileges as citizens in other states and should not have to pay more for the same product because of the state that we chose to live in. Utah will always remain a much respected state; we believe there is an intermutual ground where all can coincide regardless if denomination. The reformation of these laws will not compromise the formidable reputation Utah has long strived to achieve. Senator Curtis, we would like to bring to your attention that our group speaks out for many people in Salt Lake City, as well as throughout all of Utah. As you will see in the petition attached to this letter and on our website, many Utahans support this change and share in our convivition. Our vision is a state in which its citizens can purchase liquor/wine more freely, and enjoy a broader selection which is reasonably taxed. We believe our request is more than acceptable. We believe it is a basic civil right owed to us as citizens of Utah. We know that with your authority you will be able to help us make this change. Please visit our website for a complete list of Utah supporters and for more information at www.geocities.com/convivial_neighbors. Thank you for your time in considering our view. Our group is certain that you will make an informed, unbiased decision based on what is right for the citizens of Utah. Sincerely, Convivial Neighbors Sign Petition |
